How fitting day works

Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the bedroom, including any slopes, windows or alcoves.
  2. We visit to measure the room and discuss the design. We also look at the way in, in case the sections need to go up narrow stairs.
  3. Your quote follows, with the layout, materials and finish set out.
  4. We make the carcasses, doors and drawers in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We install the wardrobes, hang the doors and fit the rails, shelves and drawers. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.

Before fitting day

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Advice

Fitted wardrobes in Tolworth

The inside matters as much as the doors. Long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers are arranged around what you own, so coats and dresses have room and shirts don’t waste height. It is worth noting the clothes you reach for most before the design visit. If your home has a sloping ceiling that’s hard to use and a tight bedroom where doors get in the way, that’s what fitted wardrobes are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around Tolworth, bedrooms typically have regular walls, a window on one side and sometimes a chimney breast. That makes a full wall of fitted furniture simple to plan, laid out around what you store. Where a loft conversion has been added, the sloping ceiling can take storage too.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

Is it time for fitted wardrobes?

Couples often want storage that works for two. We can plan separate sections for each person, each with the rails, shelves and drawers its owner needs.

Some of the things we’re asked to solve include:

  • Damp or musty clothes against an external wall
  • Mismatched bedroom furniture
  • Empty alcoves in the bedroom
  • An tricky slope in a loft bedroom

For a flat near Tolworth station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • How they handle walls that are not straight
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home

Questions we are often asked

Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in Tolworth?

Yes. We cover all of Kingston upon Thames and the rest of London, and Tolworth is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Do you cover homes near Tolworth station?

Yes, homes across Kingston upon Thames and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Can I choose the layout inside the wardrobe?

It’s worked out with you when we measure, based on what you wear and how much of it there is. Adjustable shelves keep some flexibility for later.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Can you fit wardrobes in a top-floor flat?

Each wardrobe is built in sections that suit the stairs, landings and lift. Let us know if your block has lift or concierge booking rules.

Looking after your furniture

These points come up often when people plan fitted wardrobes. They help whatever the room:

  • Measure the gap between the wardrobe wall and the bed
  • Ask your electrician about moving sockets early
  • List the things that will not hang, such as jumpers and shoes
  • Let us know about any damp you have seen on bedroom walls

Painted doors feel dry quickly but take longer to cure fully. At first, handle the doors with care and don’t scrub the surfaces.

Every so often, check that nothing has worked loose.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot typically do that in an older room.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

Bedrooms in Tolworth: local notes

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 75% of the housing in the streets around Tolworth, with about 8% built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for fitted wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. If your street in Tolworth joins a main road, it is worth telling us at the measuring visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Kingston upon Thames included. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Tolworth, as it does anywhere else in London. Parking and access are planned at the design visit.

If you live near Hogsmill LNR, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. For families living near Our Lady Immaculate Catholic Primary School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.

When you need someone else

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:

  • Decorating or plastering the room
  • Structural changes to the room
  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles those)

If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.
