Fitted wardrobes across Kingston upon Thames: what to expect

Rooms under a slope are common in loft conversions and top-floor rooms. We can shape a wardrobe to follow the ceiling line, keeping long hanging where there is height and drawers or shelves lower down. Space that’s hard to use otherwise becomes useful storage. Most enquiries start with mismatched bedroom furniture and bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and the fitting days are set out in your quote.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the room.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and agree the layout and doors.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. The wardrobes are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then sprayed if you chose a spray finish.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted and scribed, with any hand painting done in the room.
  6. At the end we check each door and drawer with you; fresh paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.

What goes into your quote

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.

Fitted wardrobes for homes across Kingston upon Thames

Homes across Kingston upon Thames, Surbiton, New Malden and Hampton Wick among them, often have one bedroom that has to do two jobs. The design can help one room work two ways.

About 34% of the homes in Kingston upon Thames went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 21% before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. About 34% of homes in Kingston upon Thames date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Houses from that era often have a box room over the stairs, with a raised bulkhead in the floor, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 44% of households in Kingston upon Thames, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.

Kingston upon Thames is part of the area we cover, which takes in all 32 boroughs and the City. Let us know about access and parking when you first get in touch.

Kingston upon Thames: If you live near Canbury Gardens, keeping fitted wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright. If you live in a period home close to Church of St Luke, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so tell us about it at the design visit.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check at the design visit.

Materials and finishes

Birch plywood

Wardrobe shelves can carry more weight than you’d think. Birch plywood helps keep them straight.

Doors and drawer fronts

Drawer fronts can sit behind the doors or on the outside as you prefer. Internal drawers keep a clean run of doors.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

How we price fitted wardrobes

There is no set price, because there’s no set room. The things that affect it are:

  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Doors and drawers, and how many

In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. It’s useful to talk about parking at the measuring visit, so it can be planned.

Before the design visit

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. When you contact us, it is useful to send:

  • How you want to use the space
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Where you live, with the postcode

We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

Looking after your furniture

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Plan any socket or switch changes with your electrician before fitting
  • Look at how many long coats and dresses you have
  • Check the route into your flat, not just the room
  • Think about whether hinged doors will clear the bed

Fill the rails gradually and spread the weight along them rather than packing one end. Heavy coats are best on a short rail or near a support, so the rail stays straight.

Avoid drying clothes in the bedroom where you can. Opening a window now and then helps.

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

Can a fitted wardrobe go against a cold wall?

Yes. We plan ventilation behind and inside wardrobes on external walls, in moisture-resistant MDF. Any existing damp needs dealing with before fitting.

Can fitted wardrobes follow a sloping ceiling?

Yes. We shape the wardrobe to follow the slope, with long hanging where there is height and shelves or drawers where it’s lower. It makes good use of space that’s hard to furnish.

Do you work in Kingston upon Thames?

Yes, we do. We design and make fitted wardrobes for homes in Kingston upon Thames.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

How do I get a quote?

Just fill in our short enquiry form. It’s useful to send rough sizes and a few pictures, and we’ll arrange a design visit, followed by a written quote.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, but it helps to be around at the end.

How is the price worked out?

Each room is quoted on its own: size, internal fittings, the finish and how awkward the walls are all play a part. You’ll get a quote in writing once we have measured up.
