Your questions about fitted wardrobes in West Silvertown

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in West Silvertown?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

I live in a flat in West Silvertown. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Fitted wardrobes are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can wardrobes be fitted on an uneven floor?

We allow for it from the start. We level the wardrobe on a plinth or feet and scribe it to the walls.

How long will the fitting take?

The time on site depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We will talk you through what to expect beforehand.

What happens when you come to measure?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.

Hinged or sliding doors: which suits my bedroom?

The space in front of the wardrobe usually decides it. Where a bed sits close by, sliding doors often work better, and in a roomier space hinged doors give easier access. We will look at the room with you during the design visit.

How we make fitted wardrobes for West Silvertown

The inside matters as much as the doors. Long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers are arranged around what you own, so nothing is squashed and no height is wasted. It helps to think about what you wear most before we meet. If you are living with storage boxes stacked under the bed and a sloping ceiling that’s hard to use, fitted wardrobes made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

A large number of homes around West Silvertown date from 2000 onwards, and newer bedrooms are often compact, with plasterboard walls. Fitted wardrobes are fixed into the studs or held by fixings made for the board. Where a small built-in cupboard came with the home, it can be reworked as part of the design.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the fitted wardrobe we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish.

How fitting works for fitted wardrobes

Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. The time the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Before fixing into a stud wall, we check for pipes and cables, with heavier pieces tied into the studs. Other trades handle any new sockets or plumbing.

  1. You tell us about the room, including any slopes, alcoves or windows. A rough sketch of the room helps if you have one.
  2. We come to measure and talk through hanging heights, doors and drawers.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a written quote. It lists what’s inside each wardrobe as well as the doors.
  4. Once you’re happy, the wardrobes are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for spraying or for hand painting on site.
  5. We bring them to your home and fit them in place.

Practical tips

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:

  • Have sockets moved before the wardrobes go in
  • Check the route into your flat, not just the room
  • Work out the split between long and short hanging
  • Think about whether hinged doors will clear the bed

Fill the rails gradually and spread the weight along them. Heavy coats are best on a short rail or near a support, so the rail stays straight.

Close doors gently and don’t let them swing into furniture. It keeps hinges and runners in adjustment longer.

Why bespoke in West Silvertown?

Off-the-shelf wardrobes are cheaper to buy and easy to take with you. If you are renting or moving soon, that may matter most. Built-in wardrobes become part of the house. Large off-the-shelf pieces can make a small room feel smaller, while fitted furniture, painted in a colour that suits the walls, reads as part of the room.

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.

Flats, leases and landlords

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it.

How we price fitted wardrobes

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the design visit, then set it out in the quote.

What we need to know

These details help when you contact us:

  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for

To make a start, message us from the contact page and let us know which room you have in mind and what you want the furniture to do. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a written quote follows.
