Custom House Fitted Wardrobes

Floor-to-ceiling wardrobes built to the shape of your bedroom, designed for your room in Custom House. We measure, design and quote first, then make it in our workshop and fit it.

  • Dusty space on top of the wardrobe
  • A sloping ceiling that is hard to use
  • Several odd pieces where one run of storage would do

How we make fitted wardrobes for Custom House

What goes inside is where a fitted wardrobe earns its place. We plan the mix of long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers around your clothes, so nothing is squashed and no height is wasted. It is worth noting the clothes you reach for most before the design visit. Most enquiries start with wardrobes that are full to bursting and dusty space on top of the wardrobe, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Hinged doors need space to open, which a compact bedroom may not have, so the layout and the kind of door are worked out together. Many homes around Custom House were built since 2000, and bedrooms in newer homes are often compact. The space in front is measured as carefully as the wall.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the fitted wardrobe designed for your room, its materials and its finish.

Where other trades come in

We do not treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Decorating or plastering the room
  • Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
  • Moving switches or sockets, which needs an electrician

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

How fitting day works

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on studs, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board. Floors are protected throughout, as many newer homes have finished floors that mark easily.

  1. It starts when you tell us about the room, the floor it’s on and the wardrobes you want.
  2. We visit to measure the room and discuss the design, and we measure the stairs, landings and doorways too. Tell us about parking as well, as a van normally needs a permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension in much of London.
  3. A written quote follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop the wardrobes are built in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, so each piece fits through the doors and round the landings.
  5. We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls and ceiling.

How to prepare

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Let us know about parking near your home

How to get a quote

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a written quote, so you can take your time with it. To book one, message us from the contact page.

Flats, leases and landlords

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check during the design visit.

Questions we’re often asked

How do you fit fitted wardrobes in a flat in Custom House?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Fitted wardrobes are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in Custom House?

Yes. We cover all of Newham and the rest of London, and Custom House is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, followed by a quote.

How do I get a quote?

It’s easiest to send us a few details through our contact form. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a quote in writing.

Which is better for fitted wardrobes, hinged or sliding doors?

It depends on the room. Hinged doors give full access but need clear space in front; sliding doors suit narrow rooms, though only part of the inside is open at once. We’ll help you weigh them up when we visit.

What happens at the measuring visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch.

What prompts fitted wardrobes in Custom House

Some bedrooms are hard to furnish. A sloping ceiling, a chimney breast, a low window or a door in the wrong place can defeat standard furniture. We shape fitted wardrobes around those features.

If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:

  • Mismatched bedroom furniture
  • Clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms
  • A tight bedroom where doors get in the way
  • Standard wardrobes that do not fill the wall

If your children go to St Joachim's Catholic Primary School or a school nearby, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.

What to check before you book

  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

Before and after fitting day

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • Empty the area where we will be working
  • Have sockets moved before the wardrobes go in
  • Mention if the wardrobe will go on an external wall
  • Work out the split between long and short hanging

Painted wardrobe doors only need a soft cloth that’s barely damp. Avoid abrasive pads and strong sprays, as they can dull the paint.

Every so often, check that nothing has worked loose and adjust any door that starts to catch.

Custom House homes and fitted wardrobes

About 64% of the homes in the streets around Custom House went up since 2000, and about 16% between 1973 and 1999, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Custom House include Warehouse K (Grade II), less than half a mile north-west, and Warehouse W (Grade II), less than half a mile west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Fewer homes around Custom House date from before 1919 than across Newham: about 4%, against about 37%, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We check what the walls are made of at the measuring visit, as they vary with the age of the home.

Queen's House, about 2.3 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. Close to Thames Barrier Park?
