Fitted wardrobes designed for your room

How fitting day works

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the room.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and agree the layout and doors.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and ceiling; a hand-painted finish is done on site.
  6. Before we leave, we go through the doors and drawers with you. New paint takes time to cure, so treat it gently at first.

Preparing the room

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Ask for a quote

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Advice

How we make fitted wardrobes for East Ham

Some bedrooms suit wardrobes that wrap around the bed, with tall cupboards either side and storage bridging over the headboard. Others work around a window, with a dressing table or seat in between. The layout is planned so the room doesn’t feel boxed in. If you’re living with mismatched bedroom furniture and wasted space beside the chimney breast, fitted wardrobes made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

Floors in older houses often slope, which matters around East Ham, as a large share of homes there date from before 1919. Pieces stand on a levelled plinth or adjustable feet, so doors close square and the gaps stay even. The scribe at the wall takes up any bow in the plaster.

Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Fitted wardrobes in East Ham: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 55% of the housing in the neighbourhood around East Ham, with about 16% built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The centre of East Ham is within about a quarter of a mile of the East Ham Town Centre Conservation Area. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you are unsure, check with the council before work starts. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. If your street in East Ham joins a main road, it is worth telling us at the measuring visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

Eastbury Manor House, about 1.9 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. Close to Beckton District Park? Morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window. Near listed buildings like Church of St Mary Magdalene, about 0.5 miles south of the centre of East Ham, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

East Ham is about 1 mile west of Plaistow, within the London Borough of Newham. Homes in East Ham are part of the area we cover for fitted wardrobes. Across Newham, we cover East Ham and the places around it.

Design visits and fitting in E6, IG11, E13 and E12 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. We cover homes on streets like High Street South, Market Street and High Street North, along with the roads around them, for fitted wardrobes and any of our other fitted furniture. Main roads around East Ham include the A13 and A117. If your home is on one of them, tell us at the measuring visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. Neighbouring places we cover for fitted wardrobes include Wallend (1 mile north-east), Upton Park (1 mile west), Plashet (1 mile north), Beckton (1 mile south-east) and Greengate (1 mile west). Other parts of Newham we cover include Stratford (3 miles west), Canning Town (2 miles south-west), Forest Gate (2 miles north-west), Maryland (3 miles west), East Village (3 miles north-west) and Three Mills (3 miles west). As one of the bigger places in Newham, East Ham is covered for fitted wardrobes and everything else we make.

Where other trades come in

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Converting a loft (we build storage in lofts that are already converted)
  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles those)
  • Fixing the cause of condensation or damp

Not sure whether your space suits fitted wardrobes? You can send us a few details through our contact form and we’ll tell you. How it works.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Birch plywood
  • Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Hinged or sliding doors

Flats, leases and landlords

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check at the design visit.

Questions from East Ham

I live near Barking station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Newham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in East Ham?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. You do not need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

What happens during the design visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We will also ask about access and parking.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You do. We agree the colour with you before anything is painted.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

Could you do it yourself?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

Why bespoke in East Ham?

Older homes rarely have straight walls or level floors. Standalone wardrobes may lean or leave uneven gaps against the wall. Ours are levelled on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls. Tall ceilings in older homes leave a band of empty wall above standard furniture, wasting space that could hold things you rarely use. Built-in pieces can run to the cornice or the picture rail.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that is part of the price. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space.
