About our fitted wardrobes in Canning Town
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, and a wardrobe packed against one can trap moist air. We allow for ventilation behind and within wardrobes on external walls to help avoid condensation and mould. We use moisture-resistant MDF, which suits that position. Typical reasons to get in touch are wasted space beside the chimney breast and several odd pieces where one run of storage would do, and the answer is made in our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
A large number of homes around Canning Town date from 2000 onwards, and in London many homes of that age are flats with compact bedrooms. Small rooms suit fitted furniture that uses the full height and the awkward corners. Boxed-in pipes and service risers can be built around, so nothing is wasted.
The quote comes in writing, so there is time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

How fitting day works
On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made in our workshop, one at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On the day, floors are covered first and the sections brought in. Each piece is levelled and fixed to suit plasterboard or block. Any hand painting can be finished on site.
- You contact us with a short note about the room and the wardrobes you have in mind, including any slopes, windows or alcoves.
- We visit to measure the room and go through the design.
- Your quote follows, with the layout, materials and finish set out, so you can see what’s included.
- The wardrobes are built in our workshop, sized to get through your doors and up the stairs.
- We fit them in your home, levelled and scribed to the walls. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.
How to prepare
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Do you need fitted wardrobes in Canning Town?
Sharing a bedroom means sharing the wardrobe. A fitted wardrobe can be planned with separate sections.
These come up often when people first get in touch:
- A tight bedroom where doors get in the way
- Storage boxes stacked under the bed
- Standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall
- Space under the eaves going to waste
For a family home near Rosetta Primary School, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.
Before you hire any carpenter
- Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
- Real projects you can actually look at
- Where they’ll park and unload
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?

What it costs
The price for your room depends on:
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- The width and height of the space
- How many doors and drawers there are
The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.
Helping us understand the room
There’s no need for exact sizes or plans. Just send what you can:
- Any ideas or images you’ve saved
- Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- How you want to use the space
To get a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us a little about the room. We then arrange a design visit to measure and talk through the design, and a written quote follows.
How it is made
Plinths and scribe strips
Most fitted wardrobes in older homes need scribing at the sides and top. It is what gives a fitted wardrobe its built-in look.
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF in a moisture-resistant grade is stable and paints evenly, which makes it ideal for wardrobe doors and visible panels. It is a sensible choice against a colder external wall.
Canning Town homes and fitted wardrobes
In the streets around Canning Town, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 38%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 24%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of Canning Town, Historic England’s list includes Warehouse K (Grade II), under half a mile south, and Warehouse W (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Purpose-built flats are home to about 54% of households in the streets around Canning Town, the 2021 Census shows. For a flat, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.
If you live near Keir Hardie Park, morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they won’t shade the window. The wider area includes historic houses like Queen's House, about 2.7 miles south-west. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.

Questions from Canning Town
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Custom House station?
Yes. We cover all of Newham and the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room.
Is Canning Town in the area you cover for fitted wardrobes?
Yes, Canning Town is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Newham and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We’ll design around them.
Hinged or sliding doors: which suits my bedroom?
The space in front of the wardrobe typically decides it. Where a bed sits close by, sliding doors often work better. We’ll look at the room with you during the design visit.
Is it OK to put a wardrobe on an outside wall?
Yes. Wardrobes on outside walls are designed with ventilation behind and inside. Any existing damp needs dealing with before fitting.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too.
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit.
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Let us know about it when you contact us.
