DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is quick to buy.

Fitted home offices for homes in Barkingside

Each home office is built in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits desks and long shelves, while MDF takes paint well for the doors and panels. It’s then spray-painted or hand-painted and fitted in your home in Barkingside. If your home has work things on show in the evening and a desk in the wrong light, that’s what home offices are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

A bay in an interwar house makes a bright spot for a built-in desk, with shelving or cupboards along the walls beside it. Around Barkingside, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing. A desk can follow the shape of the bay or bridge its opening.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

FAQs: fitted home offices in Barkingside

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Barkingside?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Does a conservation area in or near Barkingside affect fitted furniture?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Is the furniture made to order?

Everything is built in our workshop for your room, then fitted in your home. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

Will you paint the walls around the furniture?

No. Plastering and decorating aren’t part of our work. We paint the furniture itself, by spray or by hand.

Who chooses the colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it’s set out in the quote.

Is it time for fitted home offices?

Many people get in touch because they now work from home, at least part of the week. A kitchen table or a corner of the bedroom soon stops working. A fitted home office gives work a proper place.

If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:

  • A spare room that has to be an office and a guest room
  • An alcove or landing that could take a desk
  • A desk in the wrong light
  • Wires with no tidy route

For a family home near Avanti Court Primary School, a built-in desk can be shared between home working and homework.

  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote

Fitting day, step by step

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it sits neatly against the room. The time the fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in, and the sections are assembled in place.

  1. First you let us know about the room and what your work needs, including the equipment you use.
  2. We come to measure and work out where the desk, shelves and cable routes should go. New sockets are for your electrician, so it helps to think about them early.
  3. We send a quote in writing setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make every part in our workshop, sized for the room and the route in.
  5. The office is fitted in your home and checked, ready for work.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Starting with a design visit

We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To book a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work.

Pull-out drawers

A set of drawers can sit under one end of the desk. The middle stays open for your knees and chair. The design visit settles the layout.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Because it cuts cleanly, MDF suits panels and angled pieces. The grade we use is moisture-resistant and paints well. It makes up most of the visible parts.
