About fitted wardrobes in IG6

Wardrobes can be built around a bed, with tall cupboards either side and storage bridging over the headboard. In other rooms, the units sit either side of a window. We plan the layout so the room still feels open. We make fitted wardrobes from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are space under the eaves going to waste and wardrobes that are full to bursting.

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

  1. You send us a few details about the room and the storage you need, and we arrange a design visit.
  2. We come to measure the room, check the walls and ceiling and agree the layout.
  3. You receive a quote in writing setting out the wardrobes, doors and finish, so you can see what’s included.
  4. We make the carcasses, doors and drawers in our workshop, sized to get through your doors and up the stairs.
  5. We fit them in your home, levelled and scribed to the walls. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.

Quotes in IG6

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We will talk through what you need inside during the design visit.

Homes across IG6 and their bedrooms

Across IG6, including Newbury Park, Gants Hill and Barkingside, bedrooms come in every size. Fitted wardrobes are made for the room you have, using the full height where it helps. The inside layout is planned around your things.

The biggest shares of homes in the IG6 postcode district were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 54%) and since 2000 (about 15%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. About 54% of homes in the IG6 postcode district date from between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Houses from that era often have a box room over the stairs, with a raised bulkhead in the floor, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead. About 41% of households in the IG6 postcode district live in terraced houses, according to Census 2021. Terraced houses often have a narrow back bedroom and alcoves either side of a chimney breast, which suit fitted furniture.

Our area covers the whole of London, all 32 boroughs and the City, IG6 included. Every job starts the same way, with a design visit to measure and discuss the design.

Barkingside: If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Cairns Cottage at Barnardo's, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Close to Fairlop Waters? Keeping fitted wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright.

When you need someone else

Before you plan the job, it is useful to know what we do not do:

  • Redecorating around the wardrobes
  • Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
  • The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Getting a big standalone wardrobe into a flat or up a tight stair can be difficult. We make fitted wardrobes in sections sized to the route into your home, then put together in the room.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s easy to buy.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

Materials and finishes

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribe strips are trimmed on site to follow the walls and ceiling. It’s how a straight carcass meets a wall that isn’t straight.

Birch plywood

Shelves inside a wardrobe carry folded clothes, shoes and boxes. Birch plywood keeps them flat across wider sections.

What it costs

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. This is what makes the difference:

  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • The width and height of the space

We do not publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, talk through the design and then quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To arrange a design visit, use our contact form.

Getting in touch

Some details help us understand the job before we visit. It is useful to include:

  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Questions from IG6

What materials do you use?

We build with moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job best. Your quote sets out the materials.

Do photos help?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, especially with rough measurements. To send them, use our contact form.

What can go inside a fitted wardrobe?

The inside is planned around your clothes. Long hanging, double hanging, shelves, drawers and shoe space can all be included. We talk it through during the design visit.

Can wardrobes be fitted on an uneven floor?

Floors in older houses are often out of level. We set fitted wardrobes level on a plinth or adjustable feet, so the doors hang true.

Hinged or sliding doors: which suits my bedroom?

That depends on how much space there is in front of the wardrobe. Where a bed sits close by, sliding doors often work better, and in a roomier space hinged doors give easier access. We will look at the room with you at the measuring visit.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design.

Where is the furniture made?

It’s made at our workshop. Then we bring it to your home and fit it.
