Moisture-resistant MDF

Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well for a clean, even look.

Hand-painted finish

If you’d like the units to match the room’s woodwork, hand painting on site works well.

Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Barkingside

Most designs start with the hanging. Full-length hanging takes coats, dresses and long garments, while double hanging, one rail above another, fits shirts and jackets into half the height. We plan the mix around what you actually wear. People usually come to us about moving wardrobes out of the bedroom and setting aside a corner of a large bedroom; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around Barkingside, bedrooms usually have regular walls, a window on one side and sometimes a chimney breast. That makes a full wall of fitted furniture simple to plan, laid out around what you store. If the loft has been converted, sloping ceilings bring their own options.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

Barkingside homes and walk-in wardrobes

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Barkingside were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 59%) and since 2000 (about 15%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The National Heritage List records 11 entries within half a mile of the centre of Barkingside. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If your home in Barkingside is on or near a main road, tell us during the design visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

If you live in a flat close to Seven Kings station, walk-in wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. Near listed buildings like Cairns Cottage at Barnardo's, less than half a mile north-west of the centre of Barkingside, older homes may keep original joinery that walk-in wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If your home is one of the older houses near Children's Church And Lych Gate At Barnardo's, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design.

Barkingside is in the London Borough of Redbridge, about 3 miles north-west of Woodford. Barkingside is part of the area we cover, and the process is the same everywhere we work. In Redbridge, Barkingside is one of the places we cover.

Design visits and fitting in IG6, IG2 and IG5 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. We cover homes on streets like Bute Road, Duke Road and Oaks Lane, along with the roads around them, whether you want walk-in wardrobes or another piece made for the room. If you are just outside Barkingside, we also cover Newbury Park (1 mile south), Gants Hill (1 mile south-west), Seven Kings (1 mile south-east) and Redbridge (2 miles south-west). Elsewhere in Redbridge, we also cover Woodford (3 miles north-west), Ilford (2 miles south), Loxford (3 miles south), Wanstead (2 miles west), South Woodford (3 miles west) and Goodmayes (2 miles south-east).

Flats, blocks and rented homes

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall, after checking the walls at the measuring visit.

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you get in touch.

What walk-in wardrobes can’t fix

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Fixing the cause of damp
  • Electrical work in the room
  • Lease checks, which are for you and your building’s managers

Not sure whether your space suits walk-in wardrobes? You can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

FAQs: walk-in wardrobes in Barkingside

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Barkingside?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Is Barkingside in the area you cover for walk-in wardrobes?

Yes, we work across Redbridge, Barkingside included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

It is something we deal with all the time. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so there are no gaps at the sides.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not usually. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

We plan the route in during the design visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and each section is made to a size that will get through.

Can a walk-in wardrobe be part of a bedroom?

Yes, where the room is large enough. One end or a corner can be set aside with a run of units, with doors or left open. A new partition wall is building work, so that’s for your builder.

From workshop to your room

At the end, we tidy up. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. How long fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so it is worth mentioning during the design visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. You let us know about the room and what you want to store, from long coats to shoes.
  2. We visit to measure up and go through the layout, including any dressing table.
  3. We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. The units are made and finished in our workshop.
  5. Fitting day: the units are fitted and trimmed to the room. We then check the doors and drawers with you.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
