Fitted home offices in Woodcote Green: what you get
Where the window sits affects how comfortable the desk will be. Glare from a window can make a screen tiring to use. We’ll suggest where the desk should go to make the most of daylight without glare. It’s one of the first things we look at in Woodcote Green. If your home has flimsy shelves that won’t take the weight and a screen that’s hard to read by the window, that’s what home offices are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
Around Woodcote Green, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. In a 1930s house, the small room over the stairs often becomes the study, with a bulkhead in the floor that the desk can be built around. Shelving, a desk and closed storage can all fit a room like that.
Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

How fitting works for fitted home offices
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are usually simple, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it is going.
- It starts when you contact us with a few details about the space.
- We visit to measure the room and talk through the desk, shelving and storage. New sockets are for your electrician, so it’s useful to think about them early.
- We send a written quote setting out the design, materials and finish, for you to read through.
- Your office furniture is made at our workshop and painted to your chosen colour.
- We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and set level.

Getting a quote
A quote begins with some details from you: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, use our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a written quote.

FAQs: fitted home offices in Woodcote Green
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Is Woodcote Green in the area you cover for fitted home offices?
Yes, Woodcote Green is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Sutton and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, followed by a quote.
Who chooses the colour?
You choose it. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.
How much does a fitted home office cost?
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. A simple desk with shelves involves less work than a full wall of cupboards and drawers. We set it all out in a written quote.
What are your built-in desks made from?
We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives strength to the desk, shelves and drawers, while the doors and panels are MDF, which paints well. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.
Looking after your furniture
Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:
- Measure your chair and how much room you need behind it
- Decide how much should be open shelving and how much behind doors
- Think about what will sit on the shelves
- Think about where the sockets are now
Heavy files are best kept low or close to the supports. It helps shelves stay straight. The shelves are made for what you said you’d keep on them.
Do not overload shelves beyond what they were designed for. We size shelves for what you told us they’d carry. Spread heavy books and files evenly.
Home working in Woodcote Green: local notes
In the streets around Woodcote Green, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 44%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 21%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Within a mile of the centre of Woodcote Green, 3 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Many London boroughs run controlled parking zones, and Sutton sets its own rules. If parking near you is controlled, a visitor permit or a bay suspension may be needed, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. Parking near your home is worth mentioning at the design visit.
If you live near Carshalton Park, a desk facing a window makes the most of the daylight. For a flat near Reedham (London) station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. For a family home near Wallington High School for Girls, closed cupboards above a desk keep work papers and school books apart.

What it costs
What you pay depends on:
- The internal fittings
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- Parking and unloading on your street
- How many doors and drawers there are
Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, written once we have measured up.
What we need to know
What helps most when you first contact us:
- Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- Where you live, with the postcode
- What the furniture needs to hold
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, particularly with rough measurements. To share them, drop us a line using the contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.
