How we make fitted wardrobes for CR5

Hanging heights are planned around your clothes, not a catalogue. A tall section suits long coats and dresses, while shirts, jackets and folded trousers suit two rails, one above the other. We also think about who uses it. Most enquiries start with dusty space on top of the wardrobe and no space in front for doors to swing; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the bedroom and where it is in the house.
  2. At the design visit we plan the wardrobes with you and check the route in, including any lift or tight stair turn. Tell us about parking as well, as a van normally needs a permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension in much of London.
  3. You receive a written quote for the wardrobes.
  4. In our workshop the wardrobes are built in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, so each piece fits through the doors and round the landings.
  5. Fitting day: the sections come in, are joined and set level, and the doors are hung.

How our quotes work

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Fitted wardrobes across CR5: local notes

Homes across CR5, Coulsdon, Purley and Old Coulsdon included, have bedrooms with every kind of quirk. Each piece is fitted to the room’s own walls and floor. The paint finish, spray-painted or hand-painted, is agreed with you.

In CR5, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 35%) and the years since 2000 (about 24%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Around a third of the homes in CR5 (about 35%) date from between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs, which suits fitted storage made around its bulkhead. About 65% of households in the CR5 postcode district live in detached or semi-detached houses, based on Census 2021. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.

We work across all 32 London boroughs and the City of London, and CR5 is part of that. Every job starts the same way, with a design visit to measure and go through the design.

Coulsdon: If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Coulsdon Methodist Church, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. If you live in a flat close to Coulsdon South station, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot normally do that in an older room.

What affects the cost of fitted wardrobes

Not every room costs the same, for these reasons:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • How big the furniture is
  • The internal fittings
  • Parking near your home

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. It helps to talk about parking during the design visit, so it can be planned.

Before the design visit

To give us a picture of the room, it helps to include:

  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • How you want to use the space

We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To book a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Materials and finishes

Moisture-resistant MDF

Wardrobe doors are large, so stability matters. MDF gives a flat, smooth surface that paints well.

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish often suits wardrobes in older houses. You choose the colour, and it is easy to refresh in future.

Flats, conversions and lettings

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We can’t advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Bought wardrobes are made in set sizes, so there’s typically a gap on top and at the ends. A fitted wardrobe runs to the ceiling and the walls.

What to check before you book

  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Whether you will get a written quote, not just a figure
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in CR5

Can fitted wardrobes go on an external wall?

Yes, with ventilation planned in. An outside wall is often colder than an inside one, so we plan airflow behind and within it to help avoid condensation and mould.

How much will my fitted wardrobe cost?

Every job is priced for its room: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. You will get a quote in writing once we’ve measured up.

How long does it take to fit wardrobes?

The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We’ll explain what fitting day involves before we start.

Do you do the electrics?

No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.

Do you do plastering or decorating?

No. We make, fit and finish the furniture, and plastering and decorating are for other trades. We paint the furniture itself, by spray or by hand.

What if my bedroom floor is not level?

Uneven floors are normal in older homes. The wardrobes are levelled on adjustable feet or a plinth.

How do you get fitted wardrobes into a flat?

The wardrobes are made in sections sized to get up the stairs, into the lift and through the doors. That’s why we measure the route, not just the room. In a leasehold flat, it’s worth checking the lease first.
