Fitted home offices in Purley

About our fitted home offices in Purley

Spare rooms are a natural choice for an office, though many still need space for guests. We can design desks, shelving and cupboards that leave room for a bed, or with doors that close over the desk when you finish work. It is worth talking through at the design visit in Purley. If you are living with an awkward space with no furniture that fits and a desk buried under papers, home offices made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.

A bay in an interwar house makes a bright spot for a built-in desk, and storage can run along the walls either side. Much of the housing around Purley is interwar, semi-detached or detached. A desk can follow the shape of the bay or bridge its opening.

The furniture is made at our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

From workshop to your room

Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. Elsewhere in the house, the route is typically more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. You let us know how you work and where you’d like the office, whether that’s a spare room, an alcove or a landing.
  2. We measure the room, look at the light and note the sockets.
  3. The design is agreed and a written quote follows.
  4. Every part is made in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The office is fitted, scribed to the walls and checked with you. The cable routes are left ready to use.

How to prepare

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

Getting a quote

A quote begins with a few details from you: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. When you are ready, message us from the contact page. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, then send a written quote.

Honest limits

We do not treat damp or carry out building work, and there are a few other limits too:

  • Building a loft conversion, which isn’t our work
  • Electrical work for the office, which your electrician carries out
  • Changes to the structure of the house

Not sure whether your space suits fitted home offices? You can use our contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What it’s made from

  • Built-in desks
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Filing drawers
  • Cable routes

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

With ready-made furniture, the colour is the maker’s choice. Ours is spray-painted or hand-painted in a colour agreed with you, so it can match the room or the woodwork. Bays, box rooms and stair bulkheads are where off-the-shelf furniture struggles most, and interwar homes often have all three. Fitted furniture is made around them.

The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Common questions about fitted home offices

Is parking a problem for fitting in Purley?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

Can you make fitted home offices for a home in Purley?

Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London, and Purley is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

It’s made in sections. That is why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways at the design visit.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

What happens at the design visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too.

Could you do it yourself?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Working from home in Purley

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Purley were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 31%) and since 2000 (about 28%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for home offices, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. About 31% of homes in the neighbourhood around Purley date from between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The box room over the stairs in an interwar house is a classic home office. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Croydon has its own. Where a street in Purley is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. Parking near your home is worth mentioning at the design visit.

If your children go to Christ Church CofE Primary School (Purley) or a school nearby, closed cupboards above a desk keep work papers and school books apart. Living in a block of flats near Purley station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

The problems fitted home offices solve

Trailing cables are one of the things people most want to sort. Planned routes through the desk keep cables out of sight. New sockets are for your electrician, and the furniture is planned to suit.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • A room with two jobs to do
  • A desk in the wrong light
  • No proper place to work from home
  • Flimsy shelves that will not take the weight

For an older house near St Swithun's, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • Whether you will get a quote in writing, not just a figure
