Materials and finishes

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting gives the desk and doors a very even surface. It’s applied in our workshop, and the paint needs time to cure fully once fitted.

Hand-painted finish

Some people prefer a hand-painted finish for its softer look. It can be applied on site, in a colour agreed with you. It can match the skirting and doors.

About our fitted home offices in Emerson Park

Cables are easy to forget and hard to hide later. Cable holes and routes are built into the desk and cupboards. If you need new sockets, they’re for your electrician, and we plan the furniture around them. We look at the sockets when we visit in Emerson Park. We make home offices from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are no way to put work away and an awkward space with no furniture that fits.

A compact desk under the stairs or on a landing suits someone who works from home now and then. Around Emerson Park, where interwar homes and semis are a big part of the housing, a landing or the space below the stairs could hold a compact desk. Closed storage keeps paperwork tidy. Any meters or fuse board stay easy to get to.

Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Is bespoke worth it?

Long, thin shelves can bow under books. How far a shelf spans and what it carries make a difference. We size the shelves for what they’ll carry, using birch plywood where strength is needed. Doors, windows and radiators rarely leave a gap that matches a standard width, which leaves ready-made pieces sitting awkwardly. Built-in pieces are planned around those fixed points.

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Emerson Park homes and fitted home offices

In the area around Emerson Park, the largest groups of homes date from between 1945 and 1972 (about 38%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 23%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Emerson Park include Well Tower at Tower Lodge (Grade II), under half a mile west. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. If your street in Emerson Park joins a main road, it is worth telling us at the measuring visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.

If you live in a period home close to All Saints, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk. If you live in a flat close to Emerson Park station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

The problems fitted home offices solve

A spare room that has to do two jobs is another reason. A built-in desk and storage can leave space for a bed. It puts the room to work most of the time.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Files and folders piling up
  • No proper place to work from home
  • Glare from a window on the screen
  • Work things on show in the evening

If you live near Haynes Park, a desk facing a window makes the most of the daylight.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from

How fitting day works

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. It’s useful to clear the room and the route before we arrive. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. You get in touch and describe the space you want to work in.
  2. We visit to measure the space, including any slope, alcove or uneven wall.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. In our workshop the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, cut to the angles we measured.
  5. We fit the office in your home, trimming the edges to follow the walls and ceiling.
  6. Your spray-painted or hand-painted finish completes the office.

Getting ready for fitting day

Could you do it yourself?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Common questions about fitted home offices

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Emerson Park?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

Can you make fitted home offices for a home in Emerson Park?

Yes, Emerson Park is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Havering and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Just mention it when you contact us.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?

Possibly. It depends on your lease, and some need consent for alterations. Your lease is something we cannot advise on, so it’s worth checking before fitting day.
