Enfield Lock Bespoke Kitchens

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on bespoke kitchens in Enfield Lock starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.

Common questions about bespoke kitchens

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Is Enfield Lock in the area you cover for bespoke kitchens?

Yes, Enfield Lock is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Enfield and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

What are your kitchens made from?

Moisture-resistant MDF for painted doors and panels, and birch plywood where strength matters. The finish is spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in colours agreed with you.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

We plan the route in at the measuring visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

What happens at the measuring visit?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Can I choose my own worktop and appliances?

We plan the kitchen around the worktop, sink and appliances you choose. Knowing their sizes early helps, and the quote confirms what’s included.

About our bespoke kitchens in Enfield Lock

Many people want a tall larder for food, tins and small appliances. A larder can have shelves, deep drawers and racks, planned around what you store. Built into an alcove or the end of a wall, it puts tricky space to work. We make kitchens from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a kitchen for a room that isn’t square and spaces sized for your oven and fridge.

In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around Enfield Lock, kitchens often have a back door to the garden and a window over the sink. Cabinets, a larder and a dresser can be made to suit the layout. Your chosen worktop, sink and appliances are fitted into the design, with plumbing and electrics left to your plumber and electrician.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

What it’s made from

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which matters in drawers and shelves that carry weight. The edge can be left on show or painted.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Most painted kitchen doors we make are moisture-resistant MDF, because it’s stable and smooth.

Kitchens in Enfield Lock: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Enfield Lock were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 36%) and since 2000 (about 20%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Enfield Lock is partly covered by a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Around a third of the homes in the area around Enfield Lock (about 36%) date from between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Interwar houses often started with a small kitchen that has since been extended or opened up, so the kitchen is designed for the room as it is now.

For a flat near Enfield Lock station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. Forty Hall, about 1.8 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top.

Enfield Lock is about 3 miles south-west of Edmonton, within the London Borough of Enfield. We work across all London boroughs and the City of London, and Enfield Lock is part of that. Across Enfield, we cover Enfield Lock.

We make bespoke kitchens across EN3. If your home is on a street like Bell Lane, Park Road and Albany Road, or close by, we can visit to measure up for bespoke kitchens. Nearby, we also make bespoke kitchens in Enfield Island Village (1 mile east), Brimsdown (1 mile south) and Enfield Highway (1 mile south-west). Across the rest of Enfield, our area takes in Edmonton (3 miles south-west), Enfield (3 miles south-west), Palmers Green (5 miles south-west), New Southgate (6 miles south-west), Enfield Chase (3 miles west) and Bush Hill Park (3 miles south-west).

When you need someone else

We are carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Building work, such as removing walls
  • Any work on the gas supply
  • New sockets or circuits

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can get in touch through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. How it works.

Materials and parts

  • Larders and dressers
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Islands where space allows
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood

From workshop to your room

Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. It’s useful to clear the room and the route before we arrive. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the kitchen.
  2. The design visit covers measuring and planning the layout.
  3. You receive a written quote.
  4. The kitchen is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the kitchen in your home, while your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics.

Before we arrive

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

How to get a quote

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit. For a quote, use our contact form.

Could you do it yourself?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is quick to buy.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

Is it time for bespoke kitchens?

Often the call comes after building work has opened up the space. A new room needs a kitchen planned for its shape and light, and building work itself is for your builder.

Here’s what bespoke kitchens can help with:

  • Extra cupboard space
  • A kitchen planned around your appliances
  • Tall larder storage
  • Open shelves with cupboards below

If you live in a period home close to Ss Peter and Paul Church, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
