Fitting day, step by step

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed during the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, the sections are assembled, scribed to the walls and levelled. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether brick, block, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the room and the home it’s in.
  2. At the design visit we plan the office and measure the route in: stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. The desk and shelving are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route.
  5. We carry the sections in, assemble them in the room and fit them, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Before we arrive

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Fitted home offices in Enfield Chase: what you get

Everything in a home office starts with the desk. It’s made at a height and depth to suit you and the way you work, with storage below where it helps. Shelving and cupboards can then be built around it. We will go through the details at the measuring visit in Enfield Chase. Most enquiries start with a screen that’s hard to read by the window and work things on show in the evening; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

A good home office needs light, a comfortable desk height and somewhere to put things away. For any home in Enfield Chase, those are the first things we look at. Desk depth and shelf positions are set around how you work.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the home office we have designed for the room, what it is made from and how it’s finished.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, after checking the walls during the design visit.

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We can’t give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

How we price fitted home offices

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • How many doors and drawers there are

We don’t publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, talk through the design and then quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To arrange a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Getting in touch

A little information at the start saves time later. If you can, send:

  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A written quote follows the visit. To book one, fill in our short enquiry form.

What fitted home offices cannot fix

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:

  • Building a loft conversion, which isn’t our work
  • Knocking through or opening up rooms
  • Plastering and decorating around the office

If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

Materials and parts

  • Cable routes
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Filing drawers
  • Built-in desks
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood

The problems fitted home offices solve

Cables and chargers are a common frustration. Planned routes through the desk keep cables out of sight. New sockets are for your electrician, and the furniture is planned to suit.

If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:

  • A tangle of chargers and leads
  • No way to put work away
  • A desk in the wrong light
  • Files and folders piling up

For families living near Chase Side Primary School, a desk with shelves and closed storage can serve both work and homework.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from

Questions from Enfield Chase

Will a conservation area stop me having fitted home offices fitted in Enfield Chase?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Enfield Chase station?

Yes. We cover all of Enfield and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do photos help?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. To send them, fill in our short enquiry form.

What does a built-in desk cost?

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. The size of the room, the amount of desk, shelving and storage, and the finish all shape the price. For a quote, message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

How is the furniture painted?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Can a home office double as a guest room?

That depends on the space you have. A compact office along one wall can leave the rest of the room for a bed. At the design visit, we will suggest what works.
