Practical tips
Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. These habits help most:
- List the equipment you use, from screens to printers
- Note how many files and books you need to store
- Consider doors to hide work at the end of the day
- Think about where the sockets are now
Any sockets or wiring are for your electrician, and the furniture leaves room for them. Show them the cable routes so everything lines up. Keeping cables in their routes keeps the desk tidy.
A chair that bumps the desk can chip the paint. Ease the chair in rather than pushing it hard. Small chips on a hand-painted finish are easy to touch in.
Fitted home offices in Edmonton: what you get
Where the window sits affects how comfortable the desk will be. Glare from a window can make a screen tiring to use. We plan the desk position with the window in mind, often with the light to one side. It is one of the first things we look at in Edmonton. If your home has work things on show in the evening and a corner too odd for a standard desk, that’s what home offices are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
Some people work from home every day, while others need a desk now and then. Whatever your home in Edmonton is like, a daily office may justify a whole wall, while an occasional one can fit in a recess. We talk this through at the design visit.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Could you do it yourself?
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s quick to buy.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
Built-in desks and shelving in Edmonton
Homes built before 1919 make up about 29% of the housing in the streets around Edmonton, with about 27% built between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Part of Edmonton is in a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Terraced houses are home to about 30% of households in the streets around Edmonton, according to Census 2021. In a terrace, an alcove or the back bedroom often becomes the office.
Near listed buildings like Lamb's Cottage, under half a mile north-west of the centre of Edmonton, older homes may keep original joinery that home offices can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. If you live near Pymmes Park, a desk placed to make the most of daylight makes a big difference to a working day. Bruce Castle, about 1.8 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a small back bedroom can become a home office with a desk under the window.

What it costs
To work out the quote, we look at:
- Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
- How square the room is
- The width and height of the space
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.
What to send when you get in touch
What helps most when you first contact us:
- Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- What the furniture needs to hold
- A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- Any ideas or images you’ve saved
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.
Flats, conversions and lettings
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall, after checking the walls at the design visit.
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route at the design visit.
Fitting day, step by step
On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made in our workshop come in next. The time the fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Whatever the age of your home, the furniture is fitted to the walls you have, scribed where walls bow and levelled where floors slope. Spray-painted pieces arrive finished; hand-painted ones can be finished on site.
- To begin, use our contact form; a brief note on the room and your desk set-up is plenty.
- At the design visit we measure the room, agree the desk height and depth and plan cable routes to the sockets. New sockets or wiring are a job for your electrician, ideally before fitting.
- You receive a quote in writing for the office.
- We make the desk and storage in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with cable holes and routes built in.
- We fit it in your home, scribed and set level, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.
Before fitting day
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
Ask for a quote
The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A quote in writing follows the visit for you to look over. To arrange the visit, message us from the contact page.

Questions we are often asked
I live near Edmonton Green station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Enfield and the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Edmonton?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. You do not need to watch us work, but it helps to be around at the end.
My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?
That is normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Typically not. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first.
