Fitted wardrobes for homes in Enfield Lock
Loft conversions, common in London terraces, often leave sloping ceilings. We can shape a wardrobe to follow the ceiling line, with long hanging at the tall end and shelves or drawers where it gets lower. Space that’s hard to use otherwise becomes useful storage. We make fitted wardrobes from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about a tight bedroom where doors get in the way and damp or musty clothes against an external wall.
The front bedroom in many 1920s and 1930s houses sits above a bay, so fitted storage usually goes on the walls either side while the bay stays open. Around Enfield Lock, a big part of the housing is interwar, semi-detached or detached, so that shape of room is worth knowing. Every wall is measured, as a room that looks square rarely is.
Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Is it time for fitted wardrobes?
An awkward room is another reason. A sloping ceiling, a chimney breast, a low window or a door in the wrong place can defeat standard furniture. We shape fitted wardrobes around those features.
We’re often asked to help with:
- Empty alcoves in the bedroom
- Clothes with nowhere proper to go
- Dusty space on top of the wardrobe
- Not enough hanging space
For families living near Prince of Wales Primary School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.
Before you hire any carpenter
- Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
- Where they’ll park and unload
- Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors

Looking after your furniture
A few practical points help before and after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:
- Tell us which walls face outside
- Have sockets moved before the wardrobes go in
- For a flat, measure the stairs, landings and lift
- In a leasehold flat, read the lease first
Painted wardrobe doors only need a soft cloth that’s barely damp. Skip scouring pads and harsh cleaners.
Let doors close gently rather than slamming, and keep sliding doors from crashing into the ends. It keeps hinges and runners in adjustment longer.
Common questions about fitted wardrobes
I live near Enfield Lock station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Enfield and the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Is Enfield Lock in the area you cover for fitted wardrobes?
Yes. Enfield Lock is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Enfield and London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Do you do the electrics?
No. Electrical work is not something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.
How long does it take to fit wardrobes?
How long fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We’ll talk you through what to expect beforehand.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character.
Flats, conversions and lettings
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall, after checking the walls during the design visit.
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route during the design visit.
Bedrooms in Enfield Lock: local notes
Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 36% of the housing in the area around Enfield Lock, with about 20% built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Enfield Lock is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house does not normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you are not sure. About 35% of households in the streets around Enfield Lock live in terraced houses, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. London terraces usually have a small back bedroom and alcoves in the main bedroom, both good spaces for fitted storage.
Forty Hall, about 1.8 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go. If you live in a flat close to Enfield Lock station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Fitting day, step by step
Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. It helps to clear the room and the route before we arrive. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

- Fitting day: the wardrobes go in, are levelled and scribed, and the doors are hung.

Getting a quote

Advice
How we price fitted wardrobes
Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:
- Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- The overall size of the piece
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose.
Getting in touch
There’s no need for exact sizes or plans. Just send what you can:
- Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- How you want to use the space
- Where you live, with the postcode
The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing for you to look over. To arrange the visit, get in touch through our contact form.
