  • Wanting to close the door on work at the end of the day
  • A tangle of chargers and leads
  • Glare from a window on the screen

Fitted home offices in Enfield

Light matters in a home office. A screen facing a window can be hard to read, and a window behind you can cause glare. We’ll suggest where the desk should go to make the most of daylight without glare. We look at it early at the design visit in Enfield. Most enquiries start with a spare room that has to be an office and a guest room and cables trailing across the desk and floor, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Enfield, if the loft has been converted, the space under the eaves can take a desk and storage. For lofts, we work in rooms already converted or boarded. Elsewhere, an alcove beside a chimney breast or a bay can take a desk.

Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

How we price fitted home offices

Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:

  • Parking near your home
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. It’s useful to talk about parking at the design visit.

Before the design visit

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It’s useful to include:

  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • How you want to use the space
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling

We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, then send a written quote. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To book a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Enfield homes and fitted home offices

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 31% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Enfield, with about 24% built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The National Heritage List has 53 entries within half a mile of the centre of Enfield. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and home offices can be designed to work around them. Around a third of the homes in the neighbourhood around Enfield (about 31%) date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The box room over the stairs in an interwar house is a classic home office, built around the bulkhead.

If you live near Enfield Town Park, a desk facing a window makes the most of the daylight. If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Andrew, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk. For a family home near Enfield Grammar School, a desk long enough for two can serve a laptop and a homework book side by side.

Enfield is about 2 miles south-east of Edmonton, within the London Borough of Enfield. Anywhere in Enfield, it works the same way: we visit and measure, send a written quote, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. Our work takes in places right across the rest of London.

Every home in EN1, EN2 and N21 is covered for fitted home offices, from the main roads to the quieter streets. We cover homes on streets such as Lea Road, Farr Road and Cecil Road, whether you want fitted home offices or another piece made for the room. Main roads around Enfield include the A110. If your home is on one of them, tell us during the design visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. If you are just outside Enfield, we also cover Bush Hill Park (1 mile south-east), Bush Hill (1 mile south), Enfield Chase (1 mile west), Gordon Hill (1 mile north) and Forty Hill (1 mile north-east). Elsewhere in the rest of London, we also cover Edmonton (2 miles south-east), Palmers Green (3 miles south-west), New Southgate (4 miles south-west), Upper Edmonton (3 miles south), Oakthorpe Park (3 miles south) and Arnos Grove (3 miles south-west).

What’s near Enfield

Our area takes in the homes around St Andrew's CofE Primary School, Kings Head pub and Grange Park Preparatory School and the streets around them. Enfield has its own railway station: Enfield Town station. A little further out are St Michaels Hospital (0.7 miles north) and Museum of Enfield (a few minutes’ walk south).

What we don’t do

Before you plan the job, it’s useful to know what we do not do:

  • Changes to the structure of the house
  • New sockets, data points or wiring, which are for your electrician
  • Making good the walls, which is for a plasterer or decorator

Not sure whether your space suits fitted home offices? You can use our contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Materials and parts

  • Birch plywood
  • Cable routes
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Filing drawers
  • Built-in desks
  • Spray-painted finish

What happens on fitting day

Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Interwar houses usually have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. Home offices arrive in sections and are assembled in place.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the work you do and the equipment you use.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room, agree the desk height and depth and plan cable routes to the sockets.
  3. A quote in writing follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the desk and storage in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with cable holes and routes built in.
  5. The desk and shelves are fitted, with the cable routes ready for your equipment.

Preparing the room

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know

Ask for a quote

It is useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, especially with rough measurements. To share them, drop us a line using the contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Materials and finishes

Shelves

Office shelving often carries heavy loads. How far a shelf spans and what it holds both count. We size each shelf to carry its load without sagging.

Doors and drawer fronts

Fronts are made from moisture-resistant MDF and painted to your colour. Panelled fronts can suit a period room. The lines are kept neat and even.

Caring for painted furniture

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Think about what will sit on the shelves
  • Decide how much should be open shelving and how much behind doors
  • Think about the space you need to push back
  • Think about matching the woodwork or the walls

Wiping the desk and fronts with a soft, damp cloth is normally all they need. Dry them afterwards, and avoid abrasive pads and strong solvents. The desk edge is touched most, so give it a wipe now and then.

Keep the chair from knocking the desk edge. Ease the chair in rather than pushing it hard. Small chips on a hand-painted finish are easy to touch in.

Your questions about fitted home offices in Enfield

Does a conservation area in or near Enfield affect fitted furniture?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

I live near Enfield Town station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

What materials do you use for home offices?

The office is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives strength to the desk, shelves and drawers, while the doors and panels are MDF, which paints well. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted.

Can a desk be fitted into an alcove?

It depends on the width and depth of the alcove. Lots of alcoves suit a small desk, with shelving above and drawers below. We measure and give an honest view at the design visit.

How is a home office priced?

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. It depends on how much furniture you want, the layout and the finish. To get a quote, get in touch through our contact form and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it, and it is agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you’ve chosen.
