Fitted home offices in Richmond, Richmond upon Thames

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make fitted home offices for homes in Richmond, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Paperwork and files with nowhere to go
  • Shelving that bows under the load

About our fitted home offices in Richmond

The desk is the heart of a home office. We make it to a height and depth that suit you, your chair and your screen, with storage below where it helps. Shelves and cupboards can be planned around it. We will discuss the details during the design visit in Richmond. If you’re living with a guest room that’s needed for work and paperwork and files with nowhere to go, home offices made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.

Around Richmond, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and Victorian and Edwardian rooms normally have a chimney breast with an alcove each side. A desk can sit in an alcove, with shelving above and a cupboard below. Walls are rarely straight in older houses, so the desk and shelves are scribed to fit.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Bespoke fitted home offices or ready-made?

If you only need a simple desk against a straight wall, an off-the-shelf desk may be enough. A fitted office earns its place where the space is tricky or the storage matters. We’ll give you an honest view during the design visit. Tall standalone furniture needs fixing back to the wall so it can’t tip, and older walls of brick or lath and plaster make that harder than it looks. With fitted pieces, the fixings are planned for the wall from the start.

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Richmond homes and fitted home offices

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Richmond were built before 1919 (about 54%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 17%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Near the centre of Richmond, Historic England’s list includes The Wick and Wick Cottage (Grade I), under half a mile south, and The Trumpeters' House (Grade I), about 0.5 miles north-west. For a listed home, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. About 54% of homes in the neighbourhood around Richmond were built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Houses of that age often have alcoves beside a chimney breast that can take a desk, with shelving above.

If your children go to The Vineyard School or a school nearby, closed cupboards above a desk keep work papers and school books apart. Living in a block of flats near Richmond station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. The wider area includes historic houses such as Pembroke Lodge, about 1 mile south. If your own home is a period one, a small back bedroom can become a home office with a desk under the window.

Honest limits

Not everything around fitted home offices is carpentry, such as an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Making good the walls, which is for a plasterer or decorator
  • Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician
  • Connecting printers and screens

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can message us from the contact page and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Birch plywood
  • Filing drawers
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Cable routes
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Built-in desks
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

From workshop to your room

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. How long fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and your quote sets out the fitting days. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.

  1. It starts when you get in touch about a home office.
  2. At the design visit, we look at the room, the window and your equipment, and plan where the cables will run.
  3. Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish. You can ask us about any part of it.
  4. We make the desk, shelves and cupboards in our workshop.
  5. The office is fitted and set level, ready for your first day at the desk, with the cable routes left open.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Advice

Questions we are often asked

Can you make fitted home offices for a home in Richmond?

Yes, Richmond is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Richmond?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

How long does it take to fit a home office?

How long fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Every part is made at our workshop before we arrive. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

Do pictures help?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Is it possible to have an office and a guest bed in one room?

It depends on the size of the room. A compact office along one wall can leave the rest of the room for a bed. At the design visit, we will suggest what works.

How is a home office priced?

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The mix of desk, shelving, drawers and doors, and the finish, all play a part. We set it all out in a quote in writing.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it is worth raising during the design visit.

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
