Wall beds in Fulwell

Spare rooms in London homes are often small, and a bed that is used a few times a year takes most of the floor. A wall bed gives that floor back during the day for a desk, a hobby or just space. Guests still get a proper bed when they stay. People typically come to us about hiding the bed when it’s not in use and a playroom that can sleep visitors; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Fulwell, the spare room may be the small one at the front, over the hall and stairs. Small rooms like that suit wall beds, whether the room is a guest room, a dressing room or a study. Nothing is assumed: the room is measured wall by wall.

We write quotes in plain English. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, all taken from the design visit.

What we do not do

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Decorating around the cabinet
  • Getting consent under your lease
  • Choosing a mattress for you

If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Materials and parts

  • Shelves or a desk alongside
  • Birch plywood
  • Fold-down bed mechanism
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish

Is bespoke worth it?

You can buy wall bed units off the shelf, often for less, and in a straightforward room they may be enough. They’re made in standard sizes, so they may not suit uneven walls, low ceilings or alcoves. Ours is made to the room you have. Ready-made furniture rarely suits a bay, a box room or a bulkhead over the stairs, and those are common in interwar houses. Fitted furniture is made around them.

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

What you get with us

  • We work across all London boroughs
  • Made for your room, not a standard size
  • Scribed to uneven walls
  • Workshop-made and fitted by us

Take a look at bespoke vs off-the-shelf and what a quote should include.

Flats, leases and landlords

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them during the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so each section is sized to get through.

Caring for painted furniture

A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. These practical tips help:

  • Look at your lease before fixing to the walls
  • Give the paint time to cure fully
  • Follow the mechanism maker’s mattress guidance
  • Let us know about the wall’s construction

Small marks on a hand-painted finish can be touched up. Spray-painted finishes clean easily with a soft cloth and keep their smooth look.

Measure the space in front of the wall, not just the wall. You need clear space for the bed to come down, so think about where a chair or desk will go.

Fulwell homes and wall beds

In the neighbourhood around Fulwell, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 34%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 30%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Fulwell include Chapel in the Wood (Grade I), about 0.5 miles east, and Church of St Michael and St George (Grade II), less than half a mile south. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If your home is on or just off a main road, it is useful to mention it. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

The wider area includes historic houses like Strawberry Hill House, about 0.6 miles north-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go. If your home is one of the older houses near St Michael's, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. For families living near Stanley Primary School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.

Your questions about wall beds in Fulwell

I live near Fulwell station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Fulwell?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough measurements. You can send them when you fill in our short enquiry form.

Can a wall bed go on any wall?

It depends on the wall and floor. The mechanism has to be fixed securely as its maker specifies, to a wall or floor that can take the load, so we check it during the design visit.

Is it possible to add a desk beside the wall bed?

Yes. Shelves, cupboards or a desk can go around the bed cabinet with shelves or a desk beside it. The design keeps clear space in front for the bed to fold down.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not typically. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

How fitting day works

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. How long fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are typically simple, though we still measure the route in along with the room itself. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it’s going.

  1. We start with what the room is for, day and night.
  2. We visit, measure up and check the wall the bed will fix to. We also check there’s clear space in front to lower the bed.
  3. We send a quote setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The bed cabinet and any shelves or desk are built in our workshop.
  5. We fit everything in your home and check the bed lowers and lifts smoothly.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Getting a quote

A quote begins with a few details from you: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, get in touch through our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.
