Fitted home offices in Richmond upon Thames

We make each home office in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits desks and long shelves, while MDF takes paint well for the doors and panels. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it is brought to your home in Richmond upon Thames and fitted. We make home offices from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the things people most often want solved are files and folders piling up and a corner too odd for a standard desk.

Across London, neighbouring streets can be decades apart in age, so the place for a desk could be an alcove, a box room, a landing or a converted loft. We look at the options at the measuring visit. Walls could be brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard, so fixings are chosen for each one.

Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Fitted home offices for homes in Richmond upon Thames

In the streets around Richmond upon Thames, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 44%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 20%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Richmond upon Thames include The Trumpeters' House (Grade I), about 0.6 miles west, and Houblon's Almshouses (Grade II*), under half a mile north-west. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If your home in Richmond upon Thames is on or near a main road, tell us at the measuring visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

If your home is one of the older houses near Holy Trinity Richmond, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk. The wider area includes historic houses such as Pembroke Lodge, about 1.3 miles south. If your own home is a period one, a small back bedroom can become a home office with a desk under the window. If you live near Pesthouse Common, a desk placed to make the most of daylight makes a big difference to a working day.

Richmond upon Thames is in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, about 2 miles south-west of Twickenham. Anywhere in Richmond upon Thames, it works the same way: we visit and measure, send a written quote, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. Our work takes in places right across the rest of London, large and small.

In TW9, TW10, SW14 and TW1, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. Streets in the area include Church Road, King George Square and Topiary Square, and homes on each of them are within our area for fitted home offices. Richmond upon Thames sits close to the B321 and B322. If your home is on one of them, tell us during the design visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. Close by, we also work in North Sheen (1 mile north-east), East Sheen (1 mile east), Mortlake (1 mile east), Kew (2 miles north-east) and Strand-on-the-Green (2 miles north-east). Other parts of the rest of London we cover include Twickenham (2 miles south-west), Teddington (3 miles south-west), Hampton (4 miles south-west), Barnes (2 miles east), Hanworth (4 miles south-west) and Whitton (3 miles west).

Questions we’re often asked

Will a conservation area stop me having fitted home offices fitted in Richmond upon Thames?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

My home in Richmond upon Thames is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Home offices are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

What happens at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a written quote follows.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

Can a home office go in a loft room?

Yes, in a converted loft room. We plan around the headroom, so you can stand at the desk. Shelving and cupboards can fill the lower space under the slope.

What happens on fitting day

Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Fitting day means joining the sections, fitting them to the walls and setting them level. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether brick, block, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. First we hear about your work and the room you have in mind.
  2. At the design visit, the room is measured and the layout planned.
  3. The design is agreed and a quote in writing follows.
  4. The office is made at our workshop and painted in your colour.
  5. We fit it in your home and check every drawer and door with you. The cable routes are left ready to use.

Advice

Looking after your furniture

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Note what sits on and around your desk
  • Think about glare on your screen
  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Think about what you’d like on show

Wiping the desk and fronts with a soft, damp cloth is typically all they need. Avoid scourers and harsh cleaners. The front edge of the desk picks up marks first.

Keep heavy loads on the shelves meant for them. We size shelves for what you told us they’d carry. Spread heavy books and files evenly.

When is bespoke worth it?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot typically do that in an older room.

What affects the cost of fitted home offices

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • How square the room is
  • How big the furniture is

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

What to send when you get in touch

To give us a picture of the room, it helps to include:

  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Examples of the look you’re after

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit for you to look over. To arrange the visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Is bespoke worth it?

A fitted office can combine a desk, shelving and cupboards in one design. Separate off-the-shelf pieces seldom match in height or depth. The result is a calmer, more ordered room. Few rooms have truly flat walls and level floors, and standalone units show it with gaps and wobbles. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We will talk through what you need inside during the design visit, and the quote follows.
