Fitted home offices in North Sheen, Richmond upon Thames
In North Sheen, we design fitted home offices around the room you actually have. Your home office is designed at a visit to your home and built in our workshop.
- A guest room that’s needed for work
- Wires with no tidy route
- Glare from a window on the screen

About our fitted home offices in North Sheen
An alcove beside a chimney breast can take a neat desk with shelves above. We scribe the desk and shelving to the alcove walls, which are rarely straight. The other alcove can hold matching cupboards or bookshelves. It makes a working corner that suits the room, in North Sheen or anywhere else. Typical reasons to get in touch are a screen that’s hard to read by the window and working at the kitchen table, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
Victorian and Edwardian rooms often have fewer sockets than a modern office needs, so we plan cable routes to the sockets you have. Any new sockets are for your electrician, ideally before fitting day. With a large share of the homes around North Sheen built before 1919, it is worth thinking about early.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

From workshop to your room
Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturday fitting can be arranged.
- You tell us how you work and where you’d like the office, whether that is a spare room, an alcove or a landing.
- We measure the room, look at the light and note the sockets.
- The design is agreed and a quote in writing follows, with the finish set out.
- Every part is made at our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit it in your home and check every drawer and door with you.
Preparing the room
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
Starting with a design visit
If you know what you want, say so; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, send us a few details through our contact form.

Honest limits
Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:
- Setting up computers, screens or networks
- New sockets, data points or wiring, which are for your electrician
- Structural work, like removing walls or chimney breasts
If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

North Sheen homes and fitted home offices
Homes built before 1919 make up about 46% of the housing in the streets around North Sheen, with about 16% built between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of North Sheen include West Farm West Lodge (Grade II), under half a mile north-west, and West Hall (Grade II), less than half a mile north. If your own home is listed, internal works that affect its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in North Sheen, as it does anywhere else in London. Access and parking are talked through at the design visit.
Kew Palace, about 1 mile north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a small back bedroom can become a home office with a desk under the window. Living in a block of flats near Kew Gardens station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. If your children go to Kew Riverside Primary School or a school nearby, a desk long enough for two can serve a laptop and a homework book side by side.
North Sheen is about 3 miles south-west of Twickenham, in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. Design visits and fitting in North Sheen can be on a Saturday, by arrangement. Our Richmond upon Thames coverage includes North Sheen and the places around it.

How it’s made
Pull-out drawers
Drawers under a desk keep stationery and papers to hand. Deeper drawers can take files. We size each drawer to suit.
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well. It suits desks, long shelves and drawer boxes. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.
Common questions about fitted home offices
Is parking a problem for fitting in North Sheen?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Do you make fitted home offices for homes in North Sheen?
Yes. North Sheen is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Richmond upon Thames and London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details.
Can you build a home office in an alcove?
In many homes, yes. A desk with shelving over it can fit neatly in an alcove. It’s scribed to the alcove walls so it fits closely. At the design visit we’ll measure and tell you what fits.
Can I send pictures before the visit?
Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form.
What if the stairs or lift are small?
We plan the route in at the design visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not typically. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
Tips worth knowing
Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. These habits help most:
- Note how many files and books you need to store
- Consider doors to hide work at the end of the day
- Notice where daylight falls at different times
- Let us know about every device that needs a home
Once the fitting is done, your office is ready to use. New paintwork takes time to cure fully, so go easy on it to begin with. A desk mat helps protect the new paint while it settles.
Keep the chair from knocking the desk edge. Ease the chair in rather than pushing it hard. Minor chips can be touched up with the matching colour.
Flats, leases and landlords
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot give advice on leases.
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check at the measuring visit.
