How we make fitted home offices for Strand-on-the-Green

A spare room often makes the best home office, especially if it still needs to work as a guest room. The office can be planned to leave space for a bed or a sofa, or doors that close over the desk at the end of the day. We’ll look at how the room is used when we visit in Strand-on-the-Green. We make home offices from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and people most often get in touch about shelving that bows under the load and a room with two jobs to do.

In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Strand-on-the-Green, the spare room in a period house is often small, with a sash window and a chimney breast. A built-in desk, shelving and closed storage can fit even a modest room. Cable routes are planned so they run neatly to the sockets, and any new sockets are for your electrician.

Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Home working in Strand-on-the-Green: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Strand-on-the-Green were built before 1919 (about 48%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 15%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of Strand-on-the-Green, Historic England’s list includes Zoffany House (Grade II*), less than half a mile north-west, and Parish Church of St Anne (Grade II*), under half a mile west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. Vans bringing furniture to Strand-on-the-Green fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. Access and parking are talked through at the design visit.

If you live near Kew Green, a desk facing a window makes the most of the daylight. If your home is one of the older houses near St Paul's Church, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk. For a flat near Chiswick station, it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Questions from Strand-on-the-Green

Can you make fitted home offices for a home in Strand-on-the-Green?

Yes, Strand-on-the-Green is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Hounslow and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, and then we send a quote.

I live near Chiswick station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Hounslow and the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with some details about the room.

Do you wire in sockets for the home office?

New sockets need an electrician. We plan the furniture around them, with cable routes through the desk and units. They can then be fitted where we have allowed for them.

Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?

Possibly. A lease can require consent for alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. Check your lease, as we cannot advise on it.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

How it’s made

Doors and drawer fronts

Some home offices have doors that close over the whole desk. It suits a room that also has to work as a guest room or living room. The design visit is where we agree the doors.

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting gives the desk and doors a very even surface. It is applied in our workshop, so treat it gently while it cures fully.

Honest limits

Not everything around fitted home offices is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Knocking through or opening up rooms
  • Connecting printers and screens
  • Plastering and decorating around the office

If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

What goes into it

  • Built-in desks
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Filing drawers
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Cable routes
  • Hand-painted finish

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you contact us.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.

How fitting works for fitted home offices

Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. The time the fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, especially in a controlled parking zone, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturdays are possible by arrangement.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the room and the home it is in.
  2. We visit to measure the room and the way in, and go through the design.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. The desk and shelving are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route.
  5. The sections are brought in, joined and scribed to the walls, ready for work.

How to prepare

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Empty the space we will be working in

Getting a quote

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

Advice

When is bespoke worth it?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s quick to buy.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.
