How we make fitted home offices for Hounslow

The desk is the heart of a home office. It is made at a height and depth to suit you and the way you work, with storage below where it helps. Shelves and cupboards can be planned around it. The design visit in Hounslow is where these choices are made. We make home offices from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about a corner too odd for a standard desk and a room with two jobs to do.

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving everything tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

  1. It starts with a short note from you about the space.
  2. At the design visit we plan the office and measure the route in: stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways. It helps to tell us about parking, as much of London has controlled parking zones.
  3. A quote in writing follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. The desk and shelving are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route.
  5. We carry the sections in, assemble them in the room and fit them, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

What goes into your quote

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that is part of the price. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured.

Working from home across Hounslow

In older houses across Hounslow, an alcove beside the chimney breast can take a built-in desk, while newer flats nearby suit a desk along one wall of a spare room. We look at the options at the design visit.

In Hounslow, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 29%) and the years since 2000 (about 20%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. About 29% of homes in Hounslow date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The box room over the stairs in an interwar house is a classic home office, built around the bulkhead. 11 of the 25 places in Hounslow with their own pages here have their centre inside a conservation area, according to Historic England’s data. The rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission.

Since August 2023, the Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London, and red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping, so we plan access to your home in Hounslow ahead of fitting day.

Hounslow: The wider area includes historic houses such as Osterley House, about 1.6 miles north. For a period home anywhere nearby, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk. Close to Inwood Park? A desk facing a window makes the most of the daylight.

Pricing fitted home offices in Hounslow

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • How big the furniture is
  • How square the room is
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room

There’s no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, naming the materials and finish. To arrange a design visit, message us from the contact page.

Before the design visit

When you contact us, these help most:

  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift

If you know what you want, say so; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

What it is made from

Pull-out drawers

Desk drawers keep the things you use every day close by. Deeper drawers can take files. We size each drawer to suit.

Doors and drawer fronts

We make the fronts from moisture-resistant MDF and finish them in the colour you choose. Panels can echo the woodwork in an older room. The lines are kept neat and even.

The problems fitted home offices solve

Keeping work in its own space is a common wish. A desk with doors, or an office in a spare room, lets you close the door on work. It makes the house feel like home again in the evening.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • Work things on show in the evening
  • Paperwork and files with nowhere to go
  • A tangle of chargers and leads
  • A desk in the wrong light

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Bespoke fitted home offices or ready-made?

Standard shelving can sag under the weight of books and files. Span, depth and load all matter. We size the shelves for what they’ll carry, using birch plywood where strength is needed.

What to check before you book

  • Whether you will get a written quote, not just a figure
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • Can you see real work of theirs?

Questions we are often asked

How long does it take to fit a home office?

How long fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Every part is made at our workshop before we arrive. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

Will you paint the walls around the furniture?

No. We make, fit and finish the furniture, and plastering and decorating are for other trades. We paint the furniture itself, by spray or by hand.

Can a home office go in a loft room?

Yes, where the loft has already been converted. We place the desk so you can sit and stand without hitting the slope, and the low space under the slope can hold storage. We do not carry out loft conversions.

Do you work for landlords and letting agents?

Yes. Landlords and letting agents can arrange a design visit in the same way as anyone else. We will need access agreed with any tenants.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

The furniture is built in sections. That’s why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways at the design visit.

Do you cover areas outside London?

No. Our work is in London only: all 32 boroughs and the City of London.

Can a desk be fitted into an alcove?

It depends on the width and depth of the alcove. Lots of alcoves suit a small desk, with shelves and storage around it. We measure and give an honest view at the design visit.
