Merton Fitted Home Offices
Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make fitted home offices for homes in Merton, each designed at a visit to your home.
- A screen that is hard to read by the window
- No way to put work away
- Flimsy shelves that will not take the weight

Fitted home offices in Merton
In a period room, an alcove is often the right size for a compact desk. We scribe the desk and shelving to the alcove walls, which are rarely straight. The other alcove can hold matching cupboards or bookshelves. It gives a home in Merton a workspace that looks part of the room. We make home offices from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about work things on show in the evening and paperwork and files with nowhere to go.
Some people work from home every day, while others need a desk now and then. For a home in Merton, full-time use might call for a full wall of desk and storage, and part-time use for a compact desk that closes away. We talk this through during the design visit.
If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Flat-pack or bespoke?
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
Other services in Merton
Boards, parts and paint
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish can be applied once the furniture is in place. Marks can be touched in without much trouble. Paint needs time to cure fully, so treat it gently at first.
Moisture-resistant MDF
Doors and panels are made from moisture-resistant MDF. It holds its shape and takes paint well. It works with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
What happens on fitting day
If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving everything tidy. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, each piece is fitted to the room’s own walls, with scribing where they wander and packing where floors dip. Spray-painted pieces arrive finished; hand-painted ones can be finished on site.
- It starts with a short note from you about the space.
- At the design visit we plan the office and measure the route in: stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways.
- We send a written quote.
- We build the office in our workshop, in sections, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We carry the sections in, assemble them in the room and fit them, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Before we arrive
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
How to get a quote
The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a written quote. To book one, drop us a line using the contact form.

Questions we are often asked
Will a conservation area stop me having fitted home offices fitted in Merton?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Can you make fitted home offices for a home in Merton?
Yes. We cover the whole of London, all 32 boroughs and the City of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.
Can I send photos before the visit?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough measurements. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
That’s normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.
Is an alcove big enough for a desk?
That depends on the size of the alcove. Many are wide enough for a compact desk, with shelves and storage around it. We measure and give an honest view during the design visit.
How much does a fitted home office cost?
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. It depends on how much furniture you want, the layout and the finish. To get a quote, fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Do you need fitted home offices in Merton?
Keeping work in its own space is a common wish. A desk with doors, or an office in a spare room, lets you close the door on work. It makes the house feel like home again in the evening.
Typical reasons people contact us include:
- A guest room that is needed for work
- Work things on show in the evening
- A laptop that moves from room to room
- Cables trailing across the desk and floor
For families living near Merton Abbey Primary School, a built-in desk can be shared between home working and homework.

Flats, blocks and rented homes
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall, after checking the walls during the design visit.
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.
