We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. These are the things that affect it:
- The internal fittings
- How big the furniture is
- Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.
Helping us understand the room
Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
You do not need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit. To arrange it, get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.
Fitted home offices in Merton Abbey: what you get
Working from home is easier when the desk, shelves and storage are built for the job. Our home offices are made for spare rooms, alcoves, landings and loft rooms, shaped by the way you work. In Merton Abbey, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. Typical reasons to get in touch are an awkward space with no furniture that fits and a desk in the wrong light, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
Some people work from home every day, while others need a desk now and then. For a home in Merton Abbey, full-time use might call for a full wall of desk and storage, and part-time use for a compact desk that closes away. We talk this through at the measuring visit.
A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Off-the-shelf desks and shelving are made for flat walls and standard sizes. In an alcove, a landing or under the eaves, that leaves gaps and wasted space. A fitted home office is designed for the room and scribed to the walls. It is a bigger investment, and the gain is a workspace that uses the room well. Off-the-shelf furniture is designed for no room in particular, whereas fitted pieces are designed for one room: yours. It can be painted in a colour chosen for that room.
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Built-in desks and shelving in Merton Abbey
In the streets around Merton Abbey, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 34%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 27%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The National Heritage List records 15 entries within half a mile of the centre of Merton Abbey. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Merton included. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Merton Abbey. We go through parking and access during the design visit.
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Colour House at Misters Liberty's Print Works, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. Southside House, about 2.2 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk. For an older house near Christ Church Colliers Wood, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk.
Merton Abbey is about 2 miles north-west of Wimbledon, in the London Borough of Merton. Our work covers every London borough and the City of London, Merton Abbey included. Merton Abbey is one of the places in Merton where we make fitted home offices.

What else we make in Merton Abbey
What it is made from
Birch plywood
We use birch plywood where strength matters. It goes into the desk, the shelves and the drawers. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish can be done in your home after fitting. Small marks are simple to touch in later. That helps on a well-used desk.
When is bespoke worth it?
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.
The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot typically do that in an older room.
Questions we’re often asked
How do you fit fitted home offices in a flat in Merton Abbey?
At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Home offices are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Will a conservation area stop me having fitted home offices fitted in Merton Abbey?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
How is a home office priced?
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. The mix of desk, shelving, drawers and doors, and the finish, all play a part. Everything is set out in a written quote after the visit.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
How long does it take to fit a home office?
How long fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We make the desk and storage in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
Do you wire in sockets for the home office?
New sockets need an electrician. The furniture is designed to suit, with routes for chargers and screens. Your electrician can then fit them as planned.
What happens on fitting day
In older rooms, the furniture typically has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. How long the fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Whatever the age of your home, the furniture is fitted to the walls you have, with scribing where they wander and packing where floors dip. Spray-painted pieces arrive finished; hand-painted ones can be finished on site.
- You tell us how you work and where you’d like the office, whether that’s a spare room, an alcove or a landing.
- We measure the room, look at the light and note the sockets. Cable routes are planned at this point.
- The design is agreed and a written quote follows.
- Every part is made at our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
- We fit it in your home and check every drawer and door with you. The cable routes are left ready to use.
Preparing the room
