Shelves
Shelves can go above or beside the bed cabinet to make use of the whole wall.
Bed mechanism housing
A wall bed housing needs to be rigid and true, so we build it with care. It’s fixed into a wall or floor that can take the load.
Wall beds in Merton: what you get
Studio flats benefit more than most from a bed that folds away. During the day, the room is somewhere to sit, work and eat, and at night it becomes a bedroom. We can build shelves, cupboards or a desk around the bed cabinet to make the most of the wall. People usually come to us about a hobby room with a bed for guests and a storage wall with a bed inside; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
In a part of London with mixed housing, like much of the city, bedrooms range from box rooms to large rooms with bays and sloping ceilings. Wall beds can work in any of them, from a small spare room to a main bedroom. Nothing is assumed to be square, so the room is measured carefully.

FAQs: wall beds in Merton
Is parking a problem for fitting in Merton?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit.
Can you make wall beds for a home in Merton?
Yes. We cover the whole of London, all 32 boroughs and the City of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.
Should I send photos?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough sizes. To send them, message us from the contact page.
Do I need the building owner’s consent?
Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. We can’t advise on leases, so please check yours.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first.
How fitting works for wall beds
In older rooms, the furniture usually has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it sits neatly against the room. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Parking varies a lot across London, from permit zones to private bays, so let us know what’s near you at the design visit. If you live in a flat, any lift or building rules are worth checking too.
- You get in touch and tell us about the room and the wall where the bed could go.
- We visit to measure up, look at the wall and floor and make sure there is clear space in front to lower the bed.
- You receive a written quote for the wall bed and any storage.
- The bed housing and any shelves or desk are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the cabinet in your home and fix the mechanism as its maker specifies.
- Before we leave we show you how to lower and lift the bed.
Before fitting day
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
Arranging a design visit
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

Do you need wall beds in Merton?
In a studio or a small flat, every bit of floor counts. With the bed away, the main room is a living space again until bedtime.
Wall beds can help with:
- A proper bed instead of a sofa bed
- A studio that works by day and night
- Shelves or a desk around the bed
- A playroom that can sleep visitors

Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
- How parking will work on your street
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
Caring for painted furniture
Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:
- Look at your lease before fixing to the walls
- Let us know about the wall’s construction
- Treat new paintwork gently at first
- Follow the mechanism maker’s mattress guidance
Should the bed start to move differently, stop and let us know. Do not try to adjust the mechanism yourself unless its maker says you can.
Think about the route into the room. We make the cabinet in sections that fit up the stairs and through the doors, so let us know about narrow stairs or a small lift.

Bedroom storage in Merton
Homes built before 1919 make up about 42% of the housing in the area around Merton, with about 19% built between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The Wandle Valley Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Merton. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you are unsure, check with the council before work starts. Around Merton, about 42% of homes date from before 1919, well above the figure for the rest of London as a whole, about 27%, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. So older-house details are more likely to come into the design of wall beds.
The wider area includes historic houses like Southside House, about 1.8 miles west. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice. Near listed buildings like London Regional Transport Station, under half a mile north-west of the centre of Merton, older homes may keep original joinery that wall beds can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
