Common questions about fitted home offices

Is Crooked Billet in the area you cover for fitted home offices?

Yes. We cover all of Merton and the rest of London, and Crooked Billet is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Do you cover homes near Raynes Park station?

Yes, homes across Merton and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

It’s made in sections. That is why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways at the measuring visit.

Can you build a home office in an alcove?

That depends on the size of the alcove. Many are wide enough for a compact desk, with shelving above and drawers below. We’ll tell you honestly when we visit.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Who chooses the colour?

You do. We agree the colour with you, and it’s set out in the quote.

Fitted home offices in Crooked Billet: what you get

We make each home office in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives the desk and shelving their strength, and MDF gives the doors and panels a smooth surface for paint. It is then spray-painted or hand-painted and fitted in your home in Crooked Billet. If you’re living with shelves that sag under books and files and a tangle of chargers and leads, that’s what home offices are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Across London, neighbouring streets can be decades apart in age, and the right spot for home offices might be an alcove, a spare room, a landing or under the eaves. The design visit is where we look at the options. Each wall is checked so the fixings suit it.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish.

When is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.

Fitting day, step by step

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. We measure the hall, stairs, doors and any lift not just the room, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route. We cover floors and doorways on the way in.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the work you do and the equipment you use.
  2. We visit to measure and plan the desk, shelves and storage, and look at where the light falls. New sockets or wiring are a job for your electrician, ideally before fitting.
  3. A written quote follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the desk and storage in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with cable holes and routes built in.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed and set level, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

Before fitting day

  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

How to get a quote

Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you are ready, get in touch through our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Tips worth knowing

People planning fitted home offices often ask about these. They’re worth knowing before and after fitting:

  • Notice where daylight falls at different times
  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
  • Measure your chair and how much room you need behind it
  • Decide how much should be open shelving and how much behind doors

Any sockets or wiring are for your electrician, and the furniture leaves room for them. It helps if they know where the cable routes are. Tidy cables keep the office looking calm.

Hot mugs can mark paint, so a coaster is a good habit. Mop up spills quickly. A mat protects the area you use most.

Do you need fitted home offices in Crooked Billet?

Clutter on the desk is a common reason to get in touch. Built-in drawers, cupboards and shelving give everything a place. It keeps the work surface clear.

Fitted home offices can help with:

  • A laptop that moves from room to room
  • Paperwork and files with nowhere to go
  • Cables trailing across the desk and floor
  • Flimsy shelves that won’t take the weight

For an older house near Christ Church, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk.

Before you choose who makes it

  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote

Materials and finishes

Doors and drawer fronts

Fronts are made from moisture-resistant MDF and painted to your colour. Panelled fronts can suit a period room. The lines are kept neat and even.

Shelves

Shelves can be fixed or adjustable. Fixed shelves add stiffness to tall units, and adjustable shelves leave room to change.
