Tips worth knowing

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. These habits help most:

  • Let us know about every device that needs a home
  • Measure your chair and how much room you need behind it
  • Let us know about parking at the design visit
  • Look at the window and where the light falls

Before we leave, we check every drawer, door and shelf with you. The cable routes are pointed out so you know where everything goes. You will be ready to set up your desk.

Do not overload shelves beyond what they were designed for. Shelves are made for the load you planned. Keep the weight spread along the shelf.

About our fitted home offices in Mitcham

A spare room often makes the best home office, especially if it still needs to work as a guest room. We can design desks, shelving and cupboards that leave room for a bed, or doors that close over the desk at the end of the day. It is worth talking through at the design visit in Mitcham. If your home has a tangle of chargers and leads and glare from a window on the screen, that’s what home offices are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

A bay in an interwar house makes a bright spot for a built-in desk, and storage can run along the walls either side. Around Mitcham, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing. A desk can follow the shape of the bay or bridge its opening, with a grille if there’s a radiator below.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It sets out the home office designed for your room, its materials and its finish.

Questions we are often asked

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Mitcham?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Can you make fitted home offices for a home in Mitcham?

Yes. We cover all of Merton and the rest of London, and Mitcham is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too.

Can a home office go in a loft room?

Yes, in a converted loft room. Headroom is the main thing to plan around, so you can stand at the desk. Lower areas can take cupboards and shelves.

Can you fit sockets in the desk?

We don’t do electrical work, so sockets are for your electrician. The desk is planned with routes for cables and space for any sockets. It is useful to agree the positions at the measuring visit.

Do pictures help?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough measurements. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.

How we price fitted home offices

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:

  • The number of doors and drawers
  • How square the room is
  • How big the furniture is
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.

What we need to know

Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:

  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Your postcode and the borough

It is useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, especially with rough measurements. To send them over, use our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

What prompts fitted home offices in Mitcham

Trailing cables are one of the things people most want to sort. Planned routes through the desk keep cables out of sight. New sockets are for your electrician, and the furniture is planned to suit.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Paperwork and files with nowhere to go
  • Wanting to close the door on work at the end of the day
  • A room with two jobs to do
  • Shelves that sag under books and files

For a family home near St Thomas of Canterbury Catholic Primary School, a desk long enough for two can serve a laptop and a homework book side by side.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • A quote in writing that sets out the job
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Bespoke fitted home offices or ready-made?

Off-the-shelf desks come in the maker’s finishes. We paint the office in the colour you choose, so it sits with the rest of the room. Ready-made units come in standard depths that rarely suit every space, which may be too deep for one spot and too shallow for another. Fitted furniture is made to the depth the space can take.

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

What you get with us

  • Fitted tight to walls that are not straight
  • Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
  • We work across all London boroughs
  • Workshop-made and fitted by us

See how bespoke compares with ready-made and what to look for in a quote.

From workshop to your room

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections made in our workshop come in next, a piece at a time. How long fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so let us know at the design visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.

  1. You get in touch and tell us how you work and where you’d like the office.
  2. At the design visit we measure, look at the light and the sockets and plan the layout with you. New sockets are for your electrician, so it helps to think about them early.
  3. We send a quote in writing setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. Your office furniture is made at our workshop and painted to your chosen colour.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and set level.

Before fitting day

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Arranging a design visit

To get a quote, send us a few details through our contact form and tell us a little about the room and what you want the furniture to do. We then arrange a design visit to measure and discuss the design, and a quote in writing follows.
