In Finchley, we design fitted home offices around the room you actually have. We design your home office at a visit to your home, make it in our workshop and fit it.

Home working in Finchley: local notes

In the neighbourhood around Finchley, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 47%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 17%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how home offices are fixed and fitted. 4 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Finchley. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. More than a third of the homes in the neighbourhood around Finchley (about 47%) were built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Houses of that age often have alcoves beside a chimney breast that can take a desk, with shelving above.

If your home is one of the older houses near St Paul's Finchley, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk. Living in a block of flats near New Southgate station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. Close to Victoria Park? A desk placed to make the most of daylight makes a big difference to a working day.

Finchley is in the London Borough of Barnet. We work across all London boroughs and the City of London, and Finchley is part of that. In Barnet, Finchley is one of the places we cover.

Design visits and fitting in N3, N2, N12 and NW11 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. You will find streets here like Station Road, Chaplin Square and Market Place, and homes on each of them are within our area for fitted home offices. Finchley sits close to the B1462. If your home is on one of them, tell us at the measuring visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. We also cover the places around Finchley: Church End (1 mile west), Woodside Park (1 mile north), North Finchley (1 mile north), Friern Barnet (2 miles north-east) and Oakleigh Park (2 miles north). Across the rest of Barnet, our area takes in Barnet (3 miles north), Burnt Oak (3 miles west), Hendon (2 miles south-west), Edgware (4 miles west), Southgate (3 miles north-east) and Colindale (3 miles west). Being one of the larger places in Barnet, Finchley is covered for all of our fitted furniture.

Fitted home offices for homes in Finchley

Landings and the space under the eaves can also take a desk. Under a slope, the desk is placed where there is headroom to sit and stand. On a landing, the furniture must leave a clear way past. We measure and plan for the space you have in Finchley. Most enquiries start with a corner too odd for a standard desk and cables trailing across the desk and floor, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

In a period house, a front-room bay gives a desk good daylight, while the recesses beside the chimney breast take shelving. If your home is one of the many around Finchley built before 1919, a room like that can work as a study and still feel like part of the house. Everything is scribed to the room’s own walls.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

How fitting day works

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and explain how to look after the paint. How long fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so it helps to let neighbours know about fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. To begin, send us a few details through our contact form; a brief note on the room and your desk set-up is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room, agree the desk height and depth and plan cable routes to the sockets.
  3. A written quote follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the desk and storage in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with cable holes and routes built in.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed and set level, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

How to prepare

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know

Arranging a design visit

A quote begins with a few details from you: the room, rough measurements and some pictures if you have them. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a quote in writing.

Questions from Finchley

My house in Finchley is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Can you make fitted home offices for a home in Finchley?

Yes. Finchley is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Barnet and London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Can you fit a desk under a sloping ceiling?

Yes, in a converted loft room. Headroom is the main thing to plan around, so you can stand at the desk. Shelving and cupboards can fill the lower space under the slope.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

It is made in sections, sized for the route along with the room itself. That’s why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways during the design visit.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Flats, leases and landlords

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, after measuring the route at the measuring visit.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check during the design visit.

How it is made

Moisture-resistant MDF

Because it cuts cleanly, MDF suits panels and angled pieces. We use a moisture-resistant grade, which is stable and takes paint well. It makes up most of the visible parts.

Pull-out drawers

We make the drawer boxes from birch plywood for strength. They’re built for papers, files and kit. The fronts match the rest of the office.

Before and after fitting day

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:

  • Think about what you’d like on show
  • Think about what will sit on the shelves
  • Tell us about parking during the design visit
  • Think about glare on your screen

Small marks on a hand-painted finish can be touched in. Keep a note of the colour for later. Should you have a question about the office, message us from the contact page and we will help.

Keep the chair from knocking the desk edge. Pushing it in gently helps. Small chips on a hand-painted finish are easy to touch in.

What affects the price in Finchley

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The width and height of the space
  • The internal fittings
  • How many doors and drawers there are

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. A larger piece means more material and more time. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

What we need to know

A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:

  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
