Fitted home offices in Barnet: what you get
We make each home office in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives the desk and shelving their strength, and MDF gives the doors and panels a smooth surface for paint. It is then spray-painted or hand-painted and fitted in your home in Barnet. If you’re living with no way to put work away and a spare room that has to be an office and a guest room, home offices made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.
Paperwork, printers and chargers are what make a desk look untidy, so closed storage with routes for cables keeps them out of sight. In Barnet, as anywhere in London, home offices can be planned with a cupboard for the printer and drawers for files. Cable routes lead to the sockets you have.
Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Hand-painted finish
Hand painting can be done on site once the office is in. It is easy to touch up if it gets marked. That suits a desk that sees daily use.
Moisture-resistant MDF
We use moisture-resistant MDF because it’s stable and gives a smooth surface for paint. It’s used for the doors, fronts and side panels, where a smooth, even finish matters.
FAQs: fitted home offices in Barnet
Is Barnet in the area you cover for fitted home offices?
Yes. We cover the whole of London, all 32 boroughs and the City of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Barnet?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.
Do photos help?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough measurements. You can send them when you tell us about the room on our contact form.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
What materials do you use for home offices?
The office is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The desk, shelves and drawer boxes are birch plywood, which is strong and holds screws well, and MDF takes paint well for the doors and panels. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.
What does a built-in desk cost?
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. The size of the room, the amount of desk, shelving and storage, and the finish all shape the price. For a quote, use our contact form to arrange a design visit.
From workshop to your room
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Fitting day means joining the sections, fitting them to the walls and setting them level. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether brick, block, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Saturdays can be arranged.
- To begin, tell us about the room on our contact form; a brief note on the room and your desk set-up is plenty.
- At the design visit we measure the room, agree the desk height and depth and plan cable routes to the sockets. New sockets or wiring are a job for your electrician, ideally before fitting.
- A written quote follows with the design, materials and finish.
- The office furniture is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with gaps for cables planned in.
- The desk and shelves are fitted, with the cable routes ready for your equipment.
Preparing the room
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
How to get a quote
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Why bespoke in Barnet?
For a plain desk on a flat wall, a ready-made option can do the job. Bespoke work makes sense in an alcove, under a slope, or where you want the desk, shelves and storage to work together. At the design visit, we’ll tell you honestly which approach suits your room. Few rooms have truly flat walls and level floors, and standalone units show it with gaps and wobbles. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.
We don’t publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, discuss the design and then quote in writing. To arrange a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Where other trades come in
We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:
- New sockets, data points or wiring, which are for your electrician
- Knocking through or opening up rooms
- Converting a loft to make room for an office

More for homes in Barnet
Could you do it yourself?
The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.
Fitted home offices for homes in Barnet
About 27% of the homes in the streets around Barnet went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 26% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Within a mile of the centre of Barnet, 3 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. About 43% of households in the neighbourhood around Barnet live in detached or semi-detached houses, based on Census 2021. A house like that usually has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.
For a family home near Grasvenor Avenue Infant School, a desk with shelves and closed storage can serve both work and homework. If you live in a period home close to St John's United Reformed Church, a small back bedroom can become a home office with a desk under the window. If you live near Highlands Gardens, a desk placed to make the most of daylight makes a big difference to a working day.
