Questions we are often asked

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in East Finchley?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to New Southgate station?

Yes, homes across Barnet and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details about the room.

Should I send photos?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. You can send them when you drop us a line using the contact form.

Can you fit a desk under a sloping ceiling?

Yes, where the loft has already been converted. The desk is placed where there is headroom to sit and stand comfortably, and the low space under the slope can hold storage. The conversion itself is not our work.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

Getting it in is planned during the design visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

What are your built-in desks made from?

Our home offices are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then painted. Long shelves are sized to carry books and files without sagging. Your quote confirms the materials and finish.

Fitted home offices in East Finchley: what you get

Planning the cables early is what keeps a home office tidy. Cable holes and routes are built into the desk and cupboards. Any new sockets are fitted by your electrician, with the furniture designed to suit. We look at the sockets when we visit in East Finchley. We make home offices from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and people most often get in touch about files and folders piling up and shelving that bows under the load.

Light, desk height and closed storage matter more than size in a home office. Whatever kind of home you have in East Finchley, we plan those first. Desk depth and shelf positions are set around how you work.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Working from home in East Finchley

About 35% of the homes in the area around East Finchley went up before 1919, and about 29% between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of East Finchley include Church of the Holy Trinity (Grade II), under half a mile north-east, and Anglican Chapel (Grade II), under half a mile north-west. If your own home is listed, works inside that affect its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. The box room over the stairs in an interwar house is a classic home office, built around the bulkhead.

For a family home near Holy Trinity CofE Primary School, a built-in desk can be shared between home working and homework. Living in a block of flats near New Southgate station? Then the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it. The wider area includes historic houses like Heath Hall, about 1.1 miles south. If your own home is a period one, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk.

Could you do it yourself?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Tell us about them at the measuring visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

Fitting day, step by step

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are assembled, scribed to the walls and levelled. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether brick, block, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. It starts when you contact us about a home office. A line on how you work helps too.
  2. We visit to measure and talk about the equipment you use, and plan where the cables will run.
  3. A written quote follows, with the fitting days agreed.
  4. Your office furniture is built in our workshop, sized for the room.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave it ready for work, with the cable routes left open.

Advice

Caring for painted furniture

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Mention any parking rules on your street
  • Think about what you’d like on show
  • Think about what will sit on the shelves
  • Consider your chair when planning the desk

When we’ve finished fitting, the desk and storage are ready. New paintwork takes time to cure fully, so go easy on it to begin with. Use a mat under a laptop or anything with rubber feet while the paint hardens.

Use a mat or coasters on the desk for hot drinks. Mop up spills quickly. A mat protects the area you use most.

What it is made from

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting gives the desk and doors a very even surface. We apply it in our workshop, and the paint needs time to cure fully once fitted.

Moisture-resistant MDF

We use moisture-resistant MDF because it’s stable and gives a smooth surface for paint. It suits doors, drawer fronts and panels, where a smooth, even finish matters.
