Fitted home offices for homes in High Barnet
In the neighbourhood around High Barnet, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 42%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 25%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The National Heritage List has 42 entries within half a mile of the centre of High Barnet. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and home offices can be designed to work around them. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Barnet sets its own rules. Where a street in High Barnet is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. We ask about parking during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
If you live near King George's Fields (Monken Hadley), a desk facing a window makes the most of the daylight. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St John the Baptist, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. The wider area includes historic houses like Wyllyotts Manor, about 2.9 miles north. For a period home anywhere nearby, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk.

How we make fitted home offices for High Barnet
Cables are easy to forget and hard to hide later. Cable holes and routes are built into the desk and cupboards. Any new sockets are fitted by your electrician, with the furniture designed to suit. Talking it through at the design visit in High Barnet saves trouble later. Typical reasons to get in touch are wanting to close the door on work at the end of the day and a desk in the wrong light; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around High Barnet, a converted loft can be a quiet place to work, with storage tucked under the slope. We build in lofts that are already converted or boarded. Elsewhere, an alcove beside a chimney breast or a bay can take a desk.
The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the home office designed for your room, what it is made from and how it is finished, and it’s what the workshop builds to.

What it costs
The price for your room depends on:
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- The internal fittings
- The width and height of the space
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.
What we need to know
You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. It is enough to send:
- Approximate measurements of the space
- Any ideas or images you have saved
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a written quote. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To book a design visit, use our contact form.
How it’s made
Spray-painted finish
A spray-painted finish works well on every part of the office. We do it in our workshop, where the finish can be kept even. Any paint colour agreed with you can be used.
Pull-out drawers
Drawer boxes are made from birch plywood, which is strong and holds screws well. They carry papers, files and equipment. The fronts match the rest of the office.
What we do not do
It helps to know what’s outside our work before you plan:
- Making good the walls, which is for a plasterer or decorator
- Structural work, such as removing walls or chimney breasts
- Installing IT equipment or broadband

Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Off-the-shelf desks leave you to work out the cables. With a bespoke desk, cable routes are part of the design. It keeps things neat above and below the desk. Standard widths rarely add up to the length of a real wall, which fitted furniture avoids. It can use the full height too.
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.

FAQs: fitted home offices in High Barnet
Does a conservation area in or near High Barnet affect fitted furniture?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Do you make fitted home offices for homes in High Barnet?
Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London, and High Barnet is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.
Do you wire in sockets for the home office?
New sockets need an electrician. We plan the furniture around them, with cable routes through the desk and units. Your electrician can then fit them as planned.
What happens when you come to measure?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
How fitting day works
Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
- It starts with a short note from you about the space.
- At the design visit we plan the office and measure the route in: stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways. It helps to let us know about parking, as much of London has controlled parking zones.
- A written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
- The desk and shelving are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route.
- We carry the sections in, assemble them in the room and fit them, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Before fitting day
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
How to get a quote
Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, along with rough measurements. To share them, use our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.
