About our built-in bookshelves in Strand-on-the-Green
Older rooms often have skirting, picture rails and coving to work around. We can cut around them, stop below them or run neatly up to them. Since period walls are rarely flat, the edges are scribed to follow them. We make built-in bookshelves from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are shelves that suit a period room and empty alcoves that could hold books.
A large share of the homes around Strand-on-the-Green were built before 1919, which in London mostly means Victorian and Edwardian houses. Houses of that age typically have a chimney breast in the front and back reception rooms, with an alcove either side, and those alcoves are the natural home for built-in bookshelves. Walls are rarely flat, so each piece is scribed to the plaster and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet, then cut neatly around the skirting and any picture rail or cornice.
After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

Bespoke built-in bookshelves or ready-made?
A standalone bookcase needs to be fixed to the wall for safety anyway, so the difference is smaller than it seems. What changes is the fit, the shelf strength and the finish, all planned for your room. Off-the-shelf furniture is made for flat walls and level floors, which older houses rarely have, so you end up with gaps, wobbles and units that do not meet the skirting. Fitted furniture is scribed to the wall instead.
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that’s part of the price. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.

Questions we’re often asked
My home in Strand-on-the-Green is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
Does a conservation area in or near Strand-on-the-Green affect fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Can bookshelves go around a door?
Yes. Wrapping shelves around a door or window is a good way to fill a wall. The openings are measured when we visit.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
Can you build bookshelves over a radiator?
It’s possible with some thought. Heat needs space to escape, so we leave a gap or open front rather than boxing the radiator in. Often the better answer is to stop the shelves short of it, or have your plumber move it.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.
The problems built-in bookshelves solve
Most people come to us because the books have outgrown the shelves. They’re stacked on the floor, two deep on the shelves or packed into boxes. Built-in shelving uses the full height and width of a wall, which holds far more than a standalone unit.
Some of the things we’re asked to solve include:
- Bookshelves in keeping with an older house
- A home library or study
- Empty alcoves that could hold books
- Bowing shelves in an old bookcase
Near listed buildings like Zoffany House, less than half a mile north-west of the centre of Strand-on-the-Green, older homes may keep original joinery that built-in bookshelves can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Flats, conversions and lettings
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We cannot give advice on leases.
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so tell us about it during the design visit.

How fitting works for built-in bookshelves
Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Hand painting, if that’s your finish, can follow the fitting.
- You get in touch and tell us about the wall and your books, including roughly how many books there are.
- At the design visit, we measure up, check the wall and plan the shelf spans with you.
- We send a quote in writing for the bookshelves.
- Each section is built in our workshop to the measurements we took.
- We fit it in your home, fixed securely to the wall. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.
