How we make fitted home offices for Thamesmead

Where the window sits affects how comfortable the desk will be. A screen facing a window can be hard to read, and a window behind you can cause glare. We will suggest where the desk should go to make the most of daylight without glare. It is one of the first things we look at in Thamesmead. We make home offices from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are a room with two jobs to do and working at the kitchen table.

Across London, neighbouring streets can be decades apart in age, so the place for a desk could be an alcove, a box room, a landing or a converted loft. The design visit is where we look at the options. Each wall is checked so the fixings suit it.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It sets out the home office designed for your room, what it is made from and how it is finished.

Fitting day, step by step

Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Parking varies a lot across London, from permit zones to private bays, so let us know what’s near you during the design visit. For a flat, building rules on lifts and working hours are worth checking.

  1. You get in touch and describe the space you want to work in.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and plan a desk and storage that follow the shape of the room.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. Everything is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each piece is set level and scribed to the walls, so there are no gaps along the edges.
  6. The finish is either sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted once everything is in.

Before fitting day

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

Getting a quote

We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, then send a quote in writing. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To book a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Advice

Is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf desks leave you to work out the cables. A fitted desk can have routes built in for chargers, screens and printers. That keeps the desk and the floor tidy. Recesses, sloping ceilings and awkward corners are where ready-made furniture struggles most, and most homes have at least one. Built-in pieces are made to fit them.

There is no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, use our contact form.

Why choose Bespoke Carpentry in Thamesmead

  • Saturday visits and fitting by arrangement
  • Finished by spray or by hand
  • Scribed to uneven walls
  • Built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood

Take a look at bespoke vs off-the-shelf and how to compare quotes.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Caring for painted furniture

Most of what helps is simple. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Note what sits on and around your desk
  • Think about where the sockets are now
  • Note how many files and books you need to store
  • Think about glare on your screen

When we have finished fitting, the desk and storage are ready. New paintwork takes time to cure fully, so go easy on it to begin with. A desk mat helps protect the new paint while it settles.

Keep the chair from knocking the desk edge. Pushing it in gently helps. Small chips on a hand-painted finish are easy to touch in.

Fitted home offices for homes in Thamesmead

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Thamesmead were built between 1973 and 1999 (about 71%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 15%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Purpose-built flats are home to about 43% of households in the area around Thamesmead, the 2021 Census shows. For a flat, home offices are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day. Each London borough runs its own parking controls, and Bexley is no exception. Depending on your street in Thamesmead, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a council bay suspension may be needed. We ask about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

If you live in a period home close to St Paul, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk. If you live near Abbey Wood Park, a desk facing a window makes the most of the daylight. Living in a block of flats near Abbey Wood station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Pricing fitted home offices in Thamesmead

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:

  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Before the design visit

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

FAQs: fitted home offices in Thamesmead

Can you make fitted home offices for a home in Thamesmead?

Yes, we work across Bexley, Thamesmead included, and across the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Thamesmead?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

Can a desk be fitted into an alcove?

In many homes, yes. A desk with shelving over it can fit neatly in an alcove. It’s scribed to the alcove walls so it fits closely. At the design visit we’ll measure and tell you what fits.

Can a home office go in a loft room?

Yes, in a loft that’s already converted. The desk is placed where there’s headroom to sit and stand comfortably, with storage built into the lower parts of the slope. We don’t carry out loft conversions.

Do I choose the paint colour?

The choice is yours, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

How long is the fitting for a home office?

How long the fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Every part is made in our workshop before we arrive. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.
