About fitted home offices in Bexley
Not every home has a spare room, but a wide landing or a loft room can work. Under a slope, the desk is placed where there’s headroom to sit and stand. On a landing, the furniture must leave a clear way past. We measure and plan for the space you have in Bexley. Typical reasons to get in touch are shelves that sag under books and files and a laptop that moves from room to room, and the answer is made at our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days.
- You contact us about a home office in a spare room, alcove, landing or under the eaves.
- At the design visit we measure up and plan a desk and storage that follow the shape of the room.
- A written quote follows.
- Everything is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- On fitting day each piece is set level and scribed to the walls, so there are no gaps along the edges.
- The finish is either sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted once everything is in.
What goes into your quote
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.
Why work with us

Fitted home offices across Bexley: local notes
We make fitted home offices for homes across Bexley, in Sidcup, Welling and Erith and beyond. A desk behind doors suits a room that has to do two things. Shelf spans are chosen so books do not bow them.
The biggest shares of homes in Bexley were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 41%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 22%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how home offices are fixed and fitted. More than a third of the homes in Bexley (about 41%) date from between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs that suits a built-in desk, built around the bulkhead. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 52% of households in Bexley, the 2021 Census shows. A house like that normally has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.
Homes across Bexley range from period terraces to modern blocks, and we work in all of them. The process is the same wherever you are: a design visit, a written quote, then making and fitting.
Sidcup: If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Number 33 (farm Cottage) and Number 35, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. For families living near Birkbeck Primary School, a desk long enough for two can serve a laptop and a homework book side by side.
Where other trades come in
As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:
- Changes to the structure of the house
- Connecting printers and screens
- New sockets, data points or wiring, which are for your electrician
Could you do it yourself?
If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
What it is made from
Pull-out drawers
Desk drawers keep the things you use every day close by. A deep drawer can hold hanging files. We size each drawer to suit.
Moisture-resistant MDF
Doors and panels are made from moisture-resistant MDF. It holds its shape and takes paint well. It works with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Is bespoke worth it?
Off-the-shelf desks leave you to work out the cables. A fitted desk can have routes built in for chargers, screens and printers. That keeps the desk and the floor tidy.
Before you hire any carpenter
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
- Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
- Where they’ll park and unload
- Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
Flats, blocks and rented homes
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an awkward room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work.
Questions we are often asked
Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough measurements. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
Do you make good the walls afterwards?
No. Our work is the furniture, not the walls. We finish the furniture itself, as set out in your quote.
Is an alcove big enough for a desk?
That depends on the size of the alcove. Lots of alcoves suit a small desk, with shelving above and drawers below. We measure and give an honest view at the design visit.
What happens when you come to measure?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a quote in writing follows.
How is the furniture painted?
You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
Can you make fitted home offices for a home in Bexley?
Yes, we do. We work across Bexley.
What if my walls and floors are out of level?
It’s something we deal with all the time. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so there are no gaps at the sides.
