Walk-in wardrobes in Thamesmead: what you get

You can have doors, open storage or a mix. Doors give a tidy, finished look and help keep dust away, while open storage lets you see everything at once. The choice is yours, and we will go through it when we measure. We make walk-in wardrobes from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are the right mix of long and short hanging and a dressing area in part of a bedroom.

In a part of London with mixed housing, like much of the city, bedrooms range from box rooms to large rooms with bays and sloping ceilings. Walk-in wardrobes can work in any of them, from a small spare room to a main bedroom. Nothing is assumed to be square, so the room is measured carefully.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

The problems walk-in wardrobes solve

Others want to clear the bedroom of wardrobes. With clothes in a dressing room, the bedroom can feel more restful.

People normally get in touch with us about needs like these:

  • Moving wardrobes out of the bedroom
  • Turning a box room into a dressing room
  • Long and double hanging planned around your clothes
  • Room for a growing wardrobe

For a flat near Abbey Wood station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Whether you will get a written quote, not just a figure
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home

What we do not do

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, and there are a few other limits too:

  • Lease checks, which are for you and your building’s managers
  • Curing damp in the walls
  • Building work to create the room

Not sure whether your space suits walk-in wardrobes? You can drop us a line using the contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What it’s made from

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Dressing table
  • Hand-painted finish

How fitting day works

Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. London parking ranges from controlled zones to driveways and private bays, so tell us what applies at the measuring visit. If you live in a flat, any lift or building rules are worth checking too.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the room.
  2. We visit, measure and talk through hanging, shoe storage and a dressing table.
  3. You receive a written quote, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The units are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit everything in your home and check every door and drawer. Each unit is set level and scribed to the walls.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Arranging a design visit

Rough measurements are fine at the start. We measure everything properly at the measuring visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, fill in our short enquiry form and tell us about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Advice

Bedrooms in Thamesmead: local notes

In the neighbourhood around Thamesmead, the largest groups of homes date from between 1973 and 1999 (about 71%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 15%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Bexley sets its own rules. Depending on your street in Thamesmead, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a council bay suspension may be needed. We ask about parking at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. Where a home in Thamesmead is on or beside a main road, it is useful to mention that at the measuring visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

Eastbury Manor House, about 2.4 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design. Close to Abbey Wood Park? Walk-in wardrobes are usually planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.

Thamesmead is part of the London Borough of Bexley, about 5 miles south of Sidcup. Anywhere in Thamesmead, the process is the same: a design visit, a written quote, furniture built in our workshop and fitting in your home. Our work takes in places right across Bexley.

Design visits and fitting in SE28, SE2 and DA18 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

A basic rail system is easy to change, and that has real appeal. Bespoke joinery lets you mix doors, drawers, shelves and hanging, painted to match the room. Few rooms have truly flat walls and level floors, and standalone units show it with gaps and wobbles. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.

The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Why work with us in Thamesmead

  • Made for your room, not a standard size
  • Saturday visits and fitting by prior arrangement
  • Fitted tight to walls that aren’t straight
  • Over 300 projects completed

Take a look at bespoke vs off-the-shelf and what to look for in a quote.

When is bespoke worth it?

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

FAQs: walk-in wardrobes in Thamesmead

Can you make walk-in wardrobes for a home in Thamesmead?

Yes, we work across Bexley, Thamesmead included, and across the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.

Do you cover homes near Abbey Wood station?

Yes, homes across Bexley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

Getting it in is planned at the measuring visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and each section is made to a size that will get through.

My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?

That is normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

Should a walk-in wardrobe have doors?

It is your choice. Doors keep dust off and give a calm, finished look, while open rails and shelves let you see everything. A mix of the two is common.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not usually. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.
