Loft storage for homes in Stoke Newington
Behind an eaves door, there’s often insulation and a need for ventilation. Storage shouldn’t block the ventilation or squash the insulation. If anything looks wrong behind the eaves, it is worth asking whoever converted the loft. When we visit in Stoke Newington, we’ll see what’s there. Typical reasons to get in touch are nowhere to store bags and boxes and a loft room that doubles as an office or guest room; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
With a large share of homes around Stoke Newington built before 1919, the space under the stairs in a terraced house often holds the gas meter, the electricity meter or the fuse board. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so the design keeps them accessible. Sash and bay windows are common in houses of that age too, and good places for seating with storage below.
Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Loft walls are rarely straight, and floors are often out of level. Standard furniture leaves visible gaps. We scribe our storage to the slopes and walls, and set it level. Ready-made tall pieces have to be fixed to the wall for safety, and in an older house that can mean fixing into brick or lath and plaster. Fitted furniture is designed with the wall in mind.
The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.
Why choose us
- Fitted tight to walls that are not straight
- Made in our workshop, then fitted in your home

- Every London borough and the City of London covered
Caring for painted furniture
Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:
- Mention any parking rules on your street
- Think about hanging space for a loft bedroom
- Note the things that need a home in the loft
- Find out what’s behind the eaves, from insulation to vents
Once the fitting is done, the storage is ready to use. New paintwork takes time to cure fully, so go easy on it to begin with. Keep tape and strong cleaners away from it while it settles.
Do not overfill drawers, as heavy loads strain the runners. A quick sort every so often helps. Heavy boxes are best kept low.

For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. There are 96 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Stoke Newington. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and eaves cupboards can be designed to work around them. All of London, Hackney included, is inside the ULEZ. The wider area includes historic houses like Sutton House, about 1.7 miles south-east. If your own home is a period one, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards. For families living near St Mary's Church of England Primary School, eaves cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home. Near listed buildings like Old Church of St Mary, less than half a mile south-west of the centre of Stoke Newington, older homes may keep original joinery that eaves cupboards can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

What affects the price in Stoke Newington
What you pay depends on:
- The number of doors and drawers
- Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- How square the room is
In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. It helps to talk about parking at the design visit.
What to send when you contact us
There’s no need for exact sizes or plans. It is enough to send:
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- Any ideas or images you have saved
- How you want to use the space
- Approximate measurements of the space
To get a quote, drop us a line using the contact form and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a quote in writing follows.

How fitting works for loft storage
Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through.
- You get in touch and let us know about the loft and the stairs up to it.
- We visit to measure the loft and the way up, including the top flight and any tight turn. Tell us about parking too, as a van often needs a permit or a paid bay.
- We send a quote in writing.
- Everything is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections small enough for the loft stairs.
- We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to fit.
Before fitting day
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Let us know about parking near your home
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
Arranging a design visit
Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, then send a written quote. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Materials and finishes
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is made in layers, which makes it strong and stable. We use it for carcasses, shelves and drawer boxes, and its edge can be left visible or painted.
Plinths and scribe strips
Scribe strips are trimmed to follow the wall and the slope. They help the storage look as though it was always there. The plinth does the same job at the floor.
Questions we are often asked
I live in a flat in Stoke Newington. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Stoke Newington?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.
How long does it take to fit loft storage?
The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We make the cupboards and drawers in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
What happens when you come to measure?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and talk through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too.
