Loft storage in Shoreditch, Hackney

Planning loft storage for a home in Shoreditch? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a quote in writing, before anything is made.

  • A loft room that doubles as an office or guest room
  • A boarded loft with no proper shelving
  • Wasted space behind the knee walls

Loft storage for your home in Shoreditch

Flats, conversions and lettings

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we have measured the way in.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so tell us about it at the measuring visit.

How we make loft storage for Shoreditch

Sloping ceilings make standard wardrobes hard to fit. We shape wardrobes to the slope, putting hanging space at the tall end and shelves or drawers where it is low. It uses the full height of the room. We will plan it at the measuring visit in Shoreditch. If your home has space under the eaves going to waste and a dormer that isn’t being used, eaves cupboards made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

Hallways in newer flats and houses are often short, with doors opening off every side, so there may be only one useful stretch of wall. Around Shoreditch, many homes were built since 2000, so that is worth planning for. A shallow cupboard can take coats, shoes and the vacuum cleaner without blocking a door.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be done in your home after fitting. It’s easy to touch up if it gets marked. That suits a room in daily use.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Because it cuts cleanly, MDF is ideal for angled panels under the slope. We use a moisture-resistant grade, which is stable and takes paint well. Most of what you see is MDF.

Common questions about loft storage

Does a conservation area in or near Shoreditch affect fitted furniture?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can you make loft storage for a home in Shoreditch?

Yes, Shoreditch is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Hackney and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, followed by a quote.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

Does eaves storage affect the insulation?

Not when it is planned well. We look behind the knee wall during the design visit and plan the storage so air can still move. Insulation and ventilation work itself is not ours.

How long is the fitting for eaves storage?

The time the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We make the cupboards and drawers in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

What materials do you use for loft storage?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives strength to the carcasses and drawers, while the doors and panels are MDF, which paints well. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.

Honest limits

Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we do not do:

  • Insulation or ventilation work behind the eaves
  • New sockets, lights or wiring, which are for your electrician
  • Anything that needs Building Regulations sign-off

Not sure whether your space suits loft storage? You can get in touch through our contact form and we will tell you. How a job runs, step by step.

What goes into it

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Eaves doors and drawers
  • Sloped wardrobe tops
  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish

What happens on fitting day

In older rooms, the furniture typically has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Newer homes often have finished floors, painted walls and new doors that mark easily, so everything on the way in is covered before the sections arrive. Door frames and corners get covers too. Once inside, the pieces are joined in place.

  1. To begin, get in touch through our contact form; a brief note on the loft and the storage you want is enough.
  2. We visit to measure the slopes and eaves and talk through cupboards, drawers and wardrobes under them.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we build each section from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood to follow the slope.
  5. On fitting day the units are set level and scribed to the slope and the knee wall, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Preparing the room

  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Ask for a quote

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, send us a few details through our contact form.

Tips worth knowing

These points come up often when people plan loft storage. They help whatever the room:

  • Make a list of what you want to store in the eaves
  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
  • Consider drawers for the deep, low spaces
  • Make room so the whole loft can be measured

Before we leave, we check every door and drawer with you. Any access to the eaves is checked so it still opens. That way, everything works as planned.

Keep the eaves ventilated and avoid pressing things against the back of the space. Squashed insulation works less well. Damp in the eaves is worth raising with the people who did the conversion.

Loft storage in Shoreditch: local notes

In the neighbourhood around Shoreditch, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 39%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 28%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Shoreditch include Church of St Leonard (Grade I), less than half a mile north-east, and Church of St Michael (Grade I), less than half a mile south-west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. In inner London, a large part of the street parking sits inside borough-run controlled parking zones. For fitting in Shoreditch, a van normally needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

If your children go to Virginia Primary School or a school nearby, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. If you live in a period home close to St Leonard's Church, eaves cupboards in a converted loft are scribed to slopes that are rarely even. Living in a block of flats near Shoreditch High Street station? Then the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.
