FAQs: loft storage in Shacklewell
How do you fit loft storage in a flat in Shacklewell?
At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Eaves cupboards are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.
Can you fit loft storage to the uneven walls of an older house in Shacklewell?
Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
How much does loft storage cost?
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Drawers in the knee wall usually involve more work than simple cupboards, and the finish matters too. Everything is set out in a written quote after the visit.
Do I get to choose the colour?
You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it is set out in the quote.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.
Loft storage in Shacklewell
The space behind the knee wall normally has insulation and ventilation to think about. We design the storage so it does not block airflow or crush insulation. If anything looks wrong behind the eaves, it’s worth asking whoever converted the loft. When we visit in Shacklewell, we will see what’s there. Most enquiries start with seasonal things cluttering the loft room and a sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
Hallways in period terraces are often long and narrow, with the stairs rising along one wall. A large share of the homes around Shacklewell were built before 1919, so every bit of depth is weighed up when storage is planned. Shallow units keep the way through clear.
The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Fitting day, step by step
Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Hand painting, if that’s your finish, can follow the fitting.

Advice
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.
Do you need loft storage in Shacklewell?
Loft rooms that double as offices or guest rooms need places for things. Built-in storage under the slopes keeps the room flexible.
We are often asked to help with:
- Needing storage in a loft office
- A boarded loft with no proper shelving
- Unused space in a dormer
- A sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe
For families living near The Petchey Academy, eaves cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.
Before you hire any carpenter
- Will the doors close with even gaps?
- Can you see real work of theirs?
- Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
- How the furniture will be finished, and where
Looking after your furniture
A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. These practical tips help:
- Look at the insulation and any vents behind the knee wall
- Note how narrow the loft stairs are
- Empty the eaves so we can see what’s behind
- Decide whether you’d prefer drawers, cupboards or both
Before we leave, we check every door and drawer with you. Any access to the eaves is checked so it still opens. That way, everything works as planned.
Every so often, look at the handles and hinges. Tightening early stops a small looseness getting worse. If something stops working smoothly, tell us about the room on our contact form and describe it.

What else we make in Shacklewell
Storage in Shacklewell homes: local notes
Homes built before 1919 make up about 50% of the housing in the area around Shacklewell, with about 18% built between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. 16 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Shacklewell. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If your street in Shacklewell joins a main road, it’s worth telling us during the design visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Matthias, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. For a flat near Rectory Road station, eaves cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

Not far away are Woodberry Wetlands.
Is bespoke worth it?
If you only need a few boxes in a boarded loft, standalone shelving may be enough. Bespoke work makes sense in a converted loft room, where the storage is part of the room. At the design visit, we’ll tell you honestly which approach suits your loft. The two recesses beside a chimney breast are seldom an identical size, which means a matching pair of ready-made units seldom fits both. Fitted furniture is made to each one separately.
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.
