How we make loft storage for Lower Clapton
Getting furniture up to a loft room is part of the planning. At the design visit, we measure the stairs and landings as well as the loft, so the sections we make in our workshop can be carried up. It is part of the job for any loft room in Lower Clapton. Typical reasons to get in touch are standard furniture that won’t go up the loft stairs and a sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Lower Clapton, and blocks often have rules on lifts, deliveries and when work can happen. Checking with the managing agent early makes the day smoother. A lease can require consent for fixing to walls, so check yours first.
The furniture is made in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Common questions about loft storage
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Lower Clapton?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Can I send photos before the visit?
Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. You can send them when you tell us about the room on our contact form.
Will eaves storage block the ventilation?
A good design avoids that. We look behind the knee wall at the measuring visit and plan the storage so air can still move. We do not alter insulation or vents.
Do you make the furniture yourselves?
Each piece is made at our workshop for the room it’s going into, then fitted in your home. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
What do eaves cupboards cost?
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Drawers in the knee wall typically involve more work than simple cupboards, and the finish matters too. Everything is set out in a quote in writing after the visit.

Flats, blocks and rented homes
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it.
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We cannot advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
Fitting day, step by step
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it looks as though it was always there. How long fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. With little room to spare in a flat, pieces come in as they’re needed. Floors are covered and dust is kept down. The fixings suit each wall, whether solid or stud.
- First you tell us about the loft room and what you’d like to store there, and how you get up to it.
- At the design visit we measure the knee walls, slopes and stairs and plan the storage with you, including the headroom under the slope.
- We send a written quote setting out the design, materials and finish.
- Your storage is built in our workshop and painted to your chosen colour.
- We carry it up, fit it and leave it ready to use.
Before we arrive
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

Advice
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.
Before and after fitting day
Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. These habits help most:
- Find out what’s behind the eaves, from insulation to vents
- Decide whether you’d prefer drawers, cupboards or both
- Think about matching the woodwork or the walls
- Let us know about parking near your home
Keep the ventilation behind the eaves clear. Leave the gaps we have designed in. It helps keep the loft in good order.
Sharp edges and heavy boxes can chip a painted edge. Put tools in a case so they do not knock the paint. A small chip on a hand-painted finish is easy to touch in.
