Loft storage designed for your room
Loft storage in West Hackney: what you get
A loft room can hold a great deal of storage, if the low spaces are used well. We design and make eaves cupboards, drawers in the knee walls, wardrobes under the slopes and shelves in dormers, each shaped to the room. For a home in West Hackney, it starts with a design visit to measure and talk it through. We make eaves cupboards from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about standard furniture that won’t go up the loft stairs and boxes piled on loft boards.
With a large share of homes around West Hackney built before 1919, under-stairs cupboards in older terraces often house the meters or the fuse board. Those have to stay reachable, so any storage is designed around them. Sash and bay windows are common in houses of that age too, and good places for seating with storage below.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Questions we’re often asked
Is parking a problem for fitting in West Hackney?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.
My home in West Hackney is a period house with walls that are not straight. Is that a problem?
Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Typically not. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can require listed building consent for works that affect their character.
Should I send pictures?
Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, particularly with rough sizes. To send them, fill in our short enquiry form.
Do you work outside London?
No. We cover London only: all 32 boroughs and the City of London.

When is bespoke worth it?
Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.
Is it time for loft storage?
A boarded loft can be made far more useful with shelving. Storage in a boarded loft keeps everything organised. It suits seasonal things and boxes.
Loft storage can help with:
- A dormer that is not being used
- A sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe
- Standard furniture that will not go up the loft stairs
- A new loft conversion that needs storage
For a family home near Benthal Primary School, eaves cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.
Choosing a carpenter
- Whether the route into your home has been checked
- Real projects you can actually look at
- How the doors are hung and adjusted
- Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
West Hackney homes and loft storage
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around West Hackney were built before 1919 (about 49%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 17%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Within a mile of the centre of West Hackney, 11 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 25% of households in the area around West Hackney, the 2021 Census shows. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.
If you live in a flat close to Rectory Road station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. The wider area includes historic houses like Sutton House, about 1.2 miles south-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, sloping ceilings in a loft room suit wardrobes cut to the angle.
West Hackney is about 2 miles south of Shoreditch, within the London Borough of Hackney. We cover West Hackney as part of our work across Hackney, and the process is the same everywhere we work. We cover places right across Hackney, from the busiest high streets to quiet residential roads.
We make loft storage across N16, E5 and E8. Whether you live on a street like Muir Road, Burma Road and Piano Lane or on one nearby, we can visit to measure up for loft storage. West Hackney sits close to the A107. If your home is on one of them, tell us during the design visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. If you are just outside West Hackney, we also cover Shacklewell (1 mile south), Stoke Newington (1 mile west), Clapton (1 mile east), Stamford Hill (1 mile north) and Upper Clapton (1 mile north-east). Across the rest of Hackney, our area takes in Shoreditch (2 miles south), Hoxton (2 miles south), Hackney (2 miles south-east), Haggerston (2 miles south) and Hackney Marshes (2 miles east). As one of the bigger places in Hackney, West Hackney is covered for loft storage and everything else we make.

Not far away are Woodberry Wetlands.
Fitting day, step by step
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Hand painting, if that’s your finish, can follow the fitting.
- You tell us about your converted or boarded loft.
- We measure the eaves, the slopes and the stairs up to the loft, as everything has to get up there.
- The design is agreed and a written quote follows.
- Every part is built in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
- The storage is fitted, scribed to the slopes and checked with you. Any hand painting is done in the loft.
Preparing the room
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Empty the space we’ll be working in

Starting with a design visit
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.
Advice
Is bespoke worth it?
A ready-made cupboard pushed into the eaves can block airflow. Bespoke storage is designed so it does not block ventilation or squash insulation. It helps keep the space in good order. Standard units assume square rooms, and period homes seldom have them, so you end up with gaps, wobbles and units that don’t meet the skirting. Fitted pieces follow the wall and sit level.
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We’ll talk through what you need inside during the design visit, then set it out in the quote.

Materials and finishes
Moisture-resistant MDF
We use moisture-resistant MDF because it’s stable and gives a smooth surface for paint. It is used for the doors, fronts and side panels, where a smooth, even finish matters.
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well. It suits carcasses, drawer boxes and shelves. The edge can be left on show or painted.
