Loft storage for your home in Mildmay
Loft storage in Mildmay: what you get
A converted loft often has more storage space than it first seems. Our loft storage includes eaves cupboards, knee-wall drawers, wardrobes under sloping ceilings and dormer shelving, each shaped to the room. In Mildmay, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. We make eaves cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are a converted loft with no fitted furniture and a sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe.
Outside walls in houses from before 1919 are normally solid brick, which can be cold, so storage against it is designed with ventilation behind. A large share of the homes around Mildmay date from then. Damp should be sorted before anything is fitted against the wall.
The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the eaves cupboard we’ve designed for the room, what it is made from and how it’s finished.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s quick to buy.
Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Common questions about loft storage
Do you cover homes near Dalston Kingsland station?
Yes. We cover all of Islington and the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.
How do you fit loft storage in a flat in Mildmay?
We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Typically not. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
It’s something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so it sits tight to the room.
Do you do the loft conversion too?
No. Our work is storage in loft rooms that are already converted, or in boarded lofts. Loft conversions are building work, with Building Regulations to follow. When the room is finished, we can plan the storage.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.
How fitting day works
Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, especially in a controlled parking zone, so it helps to tell us at the measuring visit what’s outside. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement.
- It starts with a few details from you.
- At the design visit we measure up and agree the layout and colour.
- Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
- The storage is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, and sprayed there if you chose a spray finish.
- The storage is fitted and scribed to the slopes, and any hand painting is done on site.
- Fresh paint needs time to cure, so use the doors and drawers gently at first.
How to prepare
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Let us know about parking near your home
- Make sure pets are kept safely away

Loft storage in Mildmay: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Mildmay were built before 1919 (about 48%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 22%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. 13 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Mildmay. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Islington included. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Mildmay. We go through parking and access at the design visit.
For families living near Newington Green Primary School, eaves cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Matthias, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

What else we make in Mildmay
Is it time for loft storage?
Standard wardrobes don’t fit under a sloping ceiling. Bespoke wardrobes follow the slope. It is a common need in a loft bedroom.
Requests we hear often include:
- An empty dormer that could hold shelves
- Low eaves that nobody can use
- A boarded loft that’s hard to keep organised
- A new loft conversion that needs storage
For a flat near Dalston Kingsland station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.
Before you choose who makes it
- Real projects you can actually look at
- How parking will work on your street
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
- A quote in writing that sets out the job
Bespoke loft storage or ready-made?
Off-the-shelf wardrobes often don’t fit up narrow loft stairs. We make each piece in sections that fit up the stairs. It means a full wardrobe can still reach the room. Tall standalone furniture needs fixing back to the wall so it can’t tip, and older walls of brick or lath and plaster make that harder than it looks. With fitted pieces, the fixings are planned for the wall from the start.
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

What it is made from
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF cuts cleanly, which suits the angled panels under a sloping ceiling. We use a moisture-resistant grade, which is stable and takes paint well. It makes up most of the visible parts.
Pull-out drawers
Drawers in the knee wall let you use the deep, low space without crawling in. We size each drawer for what you plan to keep in it. They suit clothes, bedding and boxes.
