Loft storage in West Barnes
About our loft storage in West Barnes
The low space behind a knee wall is often the most useful in the room. Cupboards and drawers set into the knee wall make that space useful. Pull-out drawers mean you don’t have to crawl in. We measure and plan for the space you have in West Barnes. People normally come to us about needing storage in a loft office and nowhere to store bags and boxes, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
In a family house, the hall and stairs typically carry the most clutter. With interwar houses, semis and detached homes a large part of the housing around West Barnes, well-planned storage by the door or under the stairs can take a lot of it. Anything that needs to stay reachable, like meters or a fuse board, is designed around.
The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the eaves cupboard designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

How fitting day works
At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and answer any questions. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. Elsewhere in the house, the route is normally more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.
- You tell us about the loft room.
- At the design visit we measure up and agree the layout and colour.
- A written quote follows.
- The storage is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, and sprayed there if you chose a spray finish.
- The storage is fitted and scribed to the slopes, and any hand painting is done on site.
- Go easy on new paintwork while it cures; hand-painted surfaces are easy to touch up later.
Preparing the room
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

How it’s made
Doors and drawer fronts
An access door into the eaves can match the rest of the fronts. It opens fully, so the space behind can still be reached. The other fronts can be doors, drawers or both.
Hand-painted finish
Some people prefer a hand-painted finish for its softer look. It can be applied on site, in a colour agreed with you. It can match the skirting and doors.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Ready-made furniture has to come up the loft stairs in one piece or flat-packed. Our storage is made in sections sized for the route. That makes it possible to fit large pieces in a small loft. Even in a 1930s house, walls and floors aren’t perfectly true, and standalone units can lean or gap. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

FAQs: loft storage in West Barnes
Can you make loft storage for a home in West Barnes?
Yes. We cover all of Merton and the rest of London, and West Barnes is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.
Is parking a problem for fitting in West Barnes?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.
How is loft storage priced?
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. It depends on how much storage you want, the shape of the room and the finish. For a quote, use our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
Do pictures help?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
What we do not do
It is useful to know what’s outside our work before you plan:
- Fixing damp or ventilation problems in the eaves
- Anything that needs Building Regulations sign-off
- Building work to turn a loft into a room
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Storage in West Barnes homes: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the area around West Barnes were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 46%) and before 1919 (about 25%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for eaves cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. 5 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central West Barnes. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Terraced houses are home to about 33% of households in the streets around West Barnes, the 2021 Census shows. Many London terraces have converted lofts with eaves that can take storage.
If your home is one of the older houses near Holy Cross, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards. If you live near Beverley Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and eaves cupboards can give those things a place. If your children go to Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School or a school nearby, eaves cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
