Loft storage in Merton Abbey: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 34% of the housing in the area around Merton Abbey, with about 27% built between 1973 and 1999, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Merton Abbey include Colour House at Misters Liberty's Print Works (Grade II), under half a mile north-west, and Wheel House at Misters Liberty's Printworks (Grade II), under half a mile north-west. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Merton sets its own rules. If your road in Merton Abbey falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what the parking is like at the measuring visit.

Living in a block of flats near Haydons Road station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. Close to Wandle Park? Eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

How we make loft storage for Merton Abbey

Loft stairs are often narrow and steep, with tight turns. At the design visit, we measure the stairs and landings as well as the loft, so every section made at our workshop fits up the stairs. It is part of the job for any loft room in Merton Abbey. Most enquiries start with a loft room with too many jobs and a boarded loft that’s hard to keep organised, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Whether your home in Merton Abbey is a period house, an interwar semi, a post-war flat or a newer build, there is often a corner or recess not doing much. Fitted storage can make it useful, with drawers, shelves, hanging or a seat depending on the space. Walls could be brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard, so we check before choosing fixings.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

What affects the cost of loft storage

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • How square the room is
  • The internal fittings
  • Parking and unloading on your street

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Before the design visit

Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:

  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, send us a few details through our contact form.

Questions we are often asked

How do you fit loft storage in a flat in Merton Abbey?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. Eaves cupboards are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Do you cover homes near Haydons Road station?

Yes, homes across Merton and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so there are no gaps at the sides.

Do you carry out loft conversions?

No. We don’t carry out loft conversions. We design and fit storage once the room is in place, including eaves cupboards, knee-wall drawers and wardrobes.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.

Do you need loft storage in Merton Abbey?

Standard wardrobes don’t fit under a sloping ceiling. Bespoke wardrobes follow the slope. It’s a common need in a loft bedroom.

Here’s what loft storage can help with:

  • Needing storage in a loft office
  • Furniture that cannot get up to the loft
  • Boxes and suitcases with no home
  • A dormer that is not being used

If you live in a period home close to Christ Church Colliers Wood, sloping ceilings in a loft room suit wardrobes cut to the angle.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • A written quote that sets out the job
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

Looking after your furniture

Getting the most from loft storage starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Consider drawers for the deep, low spaces
  • Choose a calm colour for the loft
  • Measure the loft stairs, the turns and the landing
  • Mention any parking rules on your street

When we have finished fitting, the cupboards and drawers are ready. New paintwork takes time to cure fully, so go easy on it to begin with. Avoid sticky tape, heavy knocks and harsh cleaners while it hardens.

Leave room for air to move behind the storage. Squashed insulation works less well. Damp in the eaves is worth raising with the people who did the conversion.

How fitting day works

The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Whatever the age of your home, the furniture is fitted to the walls you have, scribed where walls bow and levelled where floors slope. Hand painting can happen on site, while spray-painted pieces come ready from the workshop.

  1. First we hear about the loft room and what you’d like to store, including the eaves and any dormer.
  2. We measure the eaves, the slopes and the stairs up to the loft.
  3. We agree the cupboards, drawers and wardrobes, and send a written quote.
  4. Every part is made in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. It is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We carry it up, fit it and check every door and drawer with you. Any hand painting is done in the loft.

Before fitting day

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

How to get a quote

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the design visit. To get started, tell us about the room on our contact form. The written quote follows the visit.

Advice

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Ready-made wardrobes and cupboards are built for standard rooms. Under a slope, it leaves large gaps and wasted space. Bespoke storage follows the angle of the ceiling and fills the knee wall. It costs more than off-the-shelf furniture, and what you gain is the space a standard piece cannot reach. Few rooms have truly flat walls and level floors, so standalone furniture can lean or leave gaps. Built-in pieces are adjusted to the room as they go in.

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit.
