Loft storage in Eastfields

The space behind the knee wall typically has insulation and ventilation to think about. Storage shouldn’t block the ventilation or squash the insulation. If you have concerns about what’s behind the eaves, ask the people who did the conversion. We look at this at the design visit in Eastfields. We make eaves cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a boarded loft that’s hard to keep organised and unused space in a dormer.

An interwar house tends to have truer walls than a Victorian one, though rarely square corners. Around Eastfields, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing, so we still scribe every piece to the wall. Lids, doors and drawers are set level on site so they run true.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the eaves cupboard designed for your room, what it’s made from and how it’s finished, and the workshop works from it.

From workshop to your room

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. How long fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors are covered from the door to the room.

  1. It starts when you contact us about storage in your loft.
  2. At the design visit, we look at the slopes, the eaves and the way up, and go through the design with you.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the fitting days agreed.
  4. Your storage is made at our workshop, shaped to the loft.
  5. The storage is fitted and set level, ready to fill.

Before we arrive

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to

Starting with a design visit

We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To book a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Do you need loft storage in Eastfields?

A new loft conversion often needs storage to finish it. The room is there, but the furniture to fit it isn’t. Fitted storage finishes the room.

People normally get in touch with us about needs like these:

  • An empty dormer that could hold shelves
  • A boarded loft with no proper shelving
  • Ready-made wardrobes too big for the stairs
  • A sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe

Close to Figge's Marsh? Eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • How parking will work on your street
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?

Flats, conversions and lettings

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We can’t give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

Tips worth knowing

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • Find out what’s behind the eaves, from insulation to vents
  • Tell us about parking at the design visit
  • Make room so the whole loft can be measured
  • Choose a calm colour for the loft

Once the fitting is done, the storage is ready to use. Paint needs time to cure fully, so treat the new finish gently at first. Keep tape and strong cleaners away from it while it settles.

Temperatures in a loft room can swing more than elsewhere. Keep the room ventilated. That keeps the storage and the paint in good order.

Storage in Eastfields homes: local notes

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 43% of the housing in the area around Eastfields, with about 16% built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. There are 8 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Eastfields. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. About 43% of homes in the area around Eastfields date from between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Loft conversions are common in houses of that age, and the eaves can take fitted storage.

If you live in a period home close to St. Mark's Church, the low eaves and slopes of a converted loft are worth using. For a family home near St Mark's Church of England Academy, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit.

What it’s made from

Plinths and scribe strips

The floor in a loft room is rarely perfectly level. A plinth or adjustable feet let us set the storage level, so everything opens and closes as it should.

Spray-painted finish

For a crisp, even look, many people choose a spray-painted finish. We apply it in our workshop, and the paint needs time to cure fully once fitted.

Common questions about loft storage

Do you make loft storage for homes in Eastfields?

Yes. We cover all of Merton and the rest of London, and Eastfields is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Do you cover homes near Mitcham Eastfields station?

Yes. We cover all of Merton and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. You do not need to watch us work.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Should I send photos?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough measurements. You can send them when you get in touch through our contact form.
