Walk-in wardrobes in West Barnes
You don’t need a spare room to have a walk-in wardrobe. Where a bedroom is large enough, a section can be set aside with a partition or a run of units, with doors or left open. Any new partition wall is for your builder, and we fit the furniture inside. Typical reasons to get in touch are more space for clothes and shoes and setting aside a corner of a large bedroom; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
Bedrooms in interwar houses often have a picture rail but a plainer ceiling than a Victorian room, which makes it simple to take fitted furniture up to the ceiling. Around West Barnes, where interwar homes, semis and detached houses are a big part of the housing, the top cupboards can hold suitcases and spare bedding. Skirting boards are cut around neatly.
Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
A bespoke walk-in wardrobe takes more planning than buying a system, and it costs more. What you get is storage designed for what you own and the space you have. Bays, box rooms and stair bulkheads are where off-the-shelf furniture struggles most, and those are common in interwar houses. Built-in pieces are designed to fit them.
There is no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, naming the materials and finish. To start, message us from the contact page.

Your questions about walk-in wardrobes in West Barnes
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Motspur Park station?
Yes. We cover all of Merton and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Is West Barnes in the area you cover for walk-in wardrobes?
Yes. West Barnes is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Merton and London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
Is a box room big enough for a walk-in wardrobe?
Often, yes. We can line a small room with hanging, shelving and drawers, while leaving space to stand and turn. We check the room during the design visit.
Does my lease affect fitted furniture?
Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. We can’t advise on leases, so please check yours.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you get in touch.
West Barnes homes and walk-in wardrobes
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around West Barnes were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 46%) and before 1919 (about 25%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. 5 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of West Barnes. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. More than a third of the homes in the streets around West Barnes (about 46%) date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead.
Close to Beverley Park? Morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window. Living in a block of flats near Motspur Park station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

What prompts walk-in wardrobes in West Barnes
Some want somewhere to sit and get ready. We can design a dressing table into the room, close to the clothes and shoes.
A few of the things people ask us to solve include:
- The right mix of long and short hanging
- Room for a growing wardrobe
- Room for two wardrobes in one space
- Setting aside a corner of a large bedroom
If your children go to Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School or a school nearby, walk-in wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.
Choosing a carpenter
- Will the quote be in writing?
- How the furniture will be finished, and where
- How parking will work on your street
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
Flats, blocks and rented homes
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We cannot give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.
What happens on fitting day
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are usually simple, though we still measure the route in as well as the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it is going.
- You get in touch and tell us about the room and what you want to store.
- At the design visit we measure the room and talk through hanging, shelves and drawers, with shoe storage and a dressing table if you’d like them.
- A quote in writing follows, covering the design, materials and finish, for you to read through.
- We build the carcasses, drawers and shelves in our workshop.
- We bring everything to your home and fit it to the room.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
Ask for a quote
Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.
Advice
Honest limits
Before you plan the job, it is useful to know what we don’t do:
- Painting the walls of the room
- Structural changes or removing walls
- Curing damp in the walls
If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.
