Loft storage for your home in Bushey Mead

Loft storage in Bushey Mead: what you get

Loft stairs are often narrow and steep, with tight turns. At the design visit, we measure the stairs and landings as well as the loft, so the sections we make in our workshop can be carried up. It’s a step that matters for any loft in Bushey Mead. We make eaves cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are seasonal things cluttering the loft room and a loft room that doubles as an office or guest room.

Around Bushey Mead, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. In a typical 1930s house, storage tends to hide in the bay, under the stairs and in the box room. Any meters or fuse board under the stairs stay accessible, and the storage is planned around them.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

What affects the price in Bushey Mead

There is no set price, because there is no set room. What affects it comes down to:

  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • How square the room is

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

What we need to know

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling

Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, use our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a written quote.

Looking after your furniture

Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:

  • Think about matching the woodwork or the walls
  • Note how narrow the loft stairs are
  • Look at the insulation and any vents behind the knee wall
  • Think about what will go in each cupboard or drawer

A soft, damp cloth is the best way to keep the storage clean. Avoid scourers and harsh cleaners. Handles and drawer edges pick up marks first.

Keep sharp or very heavy items away from the painted fronts. Put tools in a case so they do not knock the paint. Minor chips can be touched up with the matching colour.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t usually do that in an older room.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you.

Bushey Mead homes and loft storage

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Bushey Mead were built before 1919 (about 39%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 33%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how eaves cupboards are fixed and fitted. Within a mile of the centre of Bushey Mead, 10 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Merton included. Vans bringing furniture to Bushey Mead fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. Parking and access are planned at the design visit.

For an older house near Dundonald Church, sloping ceilings in a loft room suit wardrobes cut to the angle. If you live in a flat close to Raynes Park station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. Near listed buildings like Methodist Church, under half a mile north-west of the centre of Bushey Mead, older homes may keep original joinery that eaves cupboards can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Fitting day, step by step

You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors are covered from the door to the room.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the loft and the stairs up to it.
  2. At the design visit we plan the storage and measure the stairs, landings and loft doorway.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. Everything is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections small enough for the loft stairs.
  5. We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to fit.

Before fitting day

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Your questions about loft storage in Bushey Mead

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Bushey Mead?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Raynes Park station?

Yes. We cover all of Merton and the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Does eaves storage affect the insulation?

Not when it is planned well. We look behind the knee wall at the measuring visit and plan the storage so air can still move. Insulation and ventilation work itself is not ours.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

Can you build a wardrobe under a sloping ceiling?

Yes. Bespoke wardrobes are made to the angle of the ceiling. Hanging goes where there is height, with shelves where it’s low. It is scribed to the slope and walls.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Electrical work is not something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design.
