How fitting day works

Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Drilling can be heard through the walls and floors of a block, and some buildings set hours for noisy work. We plan the day to suit those rules. Saturday work is by prior arrangement where the building permits it.

  1. You get in touch about a built-in TV unit.
  2. We visit to measure, note the sockets and agree where everything will go. Any new sockets are a job for your electrician.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the layout and the paint finish, for you to look over.
  4. The unit is built in our workshop, with cable routes and vents built in, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the unit goes in, is levelled and scribed, and the cable routes are left clear. A hand-painted finish is done on site, if you chose one.

Before we arrive

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

How we make TV and media units for Barnsbury

We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. You choose a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, in a colour agreed with you. We work across London, including Barnsbury once the design and quote are agreed. If you’re living with bought furniture that doesn’t suit the room and equipment running hot in a closed cupboard, that is what TV and media units are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

In a block of flats, the stairs, lift and doors decide how big each section can be. Since most households around Barnsbury live in purpose-built flats, the sections for TV and media units are planned at the design visit. Joins are positioned so they’re hidden once everything is in place.

Our quotes are written in plain words. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished.

What TV and media units cannot fix

We design, make and fit the furniture. That means:

  • Painting the walls and ceiling
  • Any electrical work (your electrician handles that, and Part P covers some of it)
  • Taking out a fireplace or chimney breast

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Standalone TV units cost less and arrive quickly. It’s also easy to replace a stand when your equipment changes, which is a fair point in its favour. Bespoke units are made for one wall and the things you use. Off-the-shelf furniture is sized for an average room, and flats are rarely average, leaving gaps or crowding a door or radiator. Built-in pieces are designed around them.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.

What it is made from

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribing trims the edges on site to follow the wall, closing the gaps.

Moisture-resistant MDF

A large TV wall needs flat, stable panels. MDF gives a smooth surface for a painted finish with crisp edges.

Built-in living-room furniture in Barnsbury

In the streets around Barnsbury, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 39%) and the years since 2000 (about 25%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Barnsbury is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house does not normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you are not sure. Purpose-built flats are home to about 60% of households in the area around Barnsbury, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. For a flat, TV and media units are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

If you live near Bingfield Park, TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it. Dr Johnson's House, about 2.1 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at. For an older house near Former Church of St Clement, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.

Your questions about TV and media units in Barnsbury

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Barnsbury?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

Is Barnsbury in the area you cover for TV and media units?

Yes, Barnsbury is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Islington and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, followed by a quote.

Does my lease affect fitted furniture?

Possibly. Leases vary, and some require the building owner’s consent for alterations. Your lease is something we can’t advise on.

Does the unit work if the TV is on a bracket?

If the TV is wall-mounted, we design the unit around the bracket position and the cable route behind it. The bracket needs a sound wall so we check the wall at the measuring visit.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Normally not. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

How do you stop equipment overheating in a TV unit?

Equipment gives off heat, so it needs air around it. The unit is planned with open backs or gaps where boxes go, rather than sealing it in a cupboard. Once it’s in, don’t block the gaps.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
