Fitted bedroom furniture in Barnsbury

Homes built before 1919 make up about 39% of the housing in the streets around Barnsbury, with about 25% built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of Barnsbury, Historic England’s list includes The Clock Tower (Grade II*), under half a mile north-west, and Pentonville Prison (Grade II), less than half a mile north-east. If your own home is listed, works inside that affect its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. A quarter or more of the homes in the area around Barnsbury (about 25%) were built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Newer homes often have compact bedrooms with plasterboard stud walls, so fitted furniture is fixed to suit the board.

Close to Bingfield Park? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. Dr Johnson's House, about 2.1 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. If your home is one of the older houses near Former Church of St Clement, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.

Fitted wardrobes in Barnsbury

The inside matters as much as the doors. We plan the mix of long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers around your clothes, so nothing is squashed and no height is wasted. It helps to think about what you wear most before we meet. Most enquiries start with a room too narrow for hinged doors and a bedroom that never feels tidy; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Most homes around Barnsbury are purpose-built flats, whether in mansion blocks or newer developments. A mansion block bedroom may have a chimney breast, high ceilings and walls that aren’t straight, while modern flats tend to have plasterboard partitions. The fixings are chosen for whichever wall you have.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

When is bespoke worth it?

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t typically do that in an older room.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.

Questions we are often asked

My home in Barnsbury is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Caledonian Road & Barnsbury station?

Yes. We cover all of Islington and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Who chooses the colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need someone to let us in. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Can fitted wardrobes go on an external wall?

Yes. Wardrobes on outside walls are designed with ventilation behind and inside, in moisture-resistant MDF. Any existing damp needs dealing with before fitting.

What we don’t do

We are carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Structural changes to the room
  • Treating damp or mould on the walls
  • The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations

If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Materials and parts

  • Birch plywood
  • Hinged or sliding doors
  • Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish

What it costs

Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:

  • How big the furniture is
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • Parking near your home

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

What to send when you get in touch

You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:

  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres

Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, fill in our short enquiry form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a quote in writing.

How fitting day works

Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Drilling can be heard through the walls and floors of a block, and many buildings limit noisy work to certain hours. Fitting day is planned around any rules your building has. Saturdays can be arranged if your building allows work then.

  1. It starts when you let us know about the room, the floor it’s on and the wardrobes you want.
  2. At the design visit we plan the wardrobes with you and check the route in, including any lift or tight stair turn.
  3. You receive a written quote for the wardrobes.
  4. In our workshop the wardrobes are built in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, so each piece fits through the doors and round the landings.
  5. We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls and ceiling.

How to prepare

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Advice

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Tell us about it when you get in touch.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.
